Gold Rectangles and Lingering Glances

Late afternoon sun cut through the high windows of the Inarizaki volleyball club room, painting long gold rectangles across the worn floorboards. Practice had been over for an hour, but the air still smelled like sweat and the gym's metallic echo—balls thudding on the court downstairs. Now the team was scattered across the tatami mats, half-dead and half-amused.

Aran Ojiwa sat cross-legged against the wall, watching Osamu Miya fumble with a bag of chips he'd smuggled in. Ginjima and Akagi were arguing about serve percentages—loudly. Suna Rintarou lay on his side, half-asleep, phone forgotten beside him. And right in the middle, Atsumu Miya sat with his legs tucked under him, wearing his sister's pleated skirt and eyeliner that definitely wasn't his.

"I still can't believe you let Samu do that," Aran said.

"Let him?" Atsumu's voice went high. "I dared him. Big difference."

"There really isn't," Suna murmured without opening his eyes.

Osamu grinned through a mouthful of chips. "Looks good, though. Covers up that ugly mug."

"Shut your mouth or I'll shut it for ya."

"Promise?"

The room laughed, easy and familiar. Kita Shinsuke sat off to the side, near the door, a cup of tea cradled in his hands. He hadn't said much since practice ended, but his eyes never stopped moving—sweeping from one conversation to the next, catching each laugh, each flicker of expression across his teammates' faces. And then, without quite meaning to, his gaze kept settling on Atsumu. Lingering a second longer each time.
