The Quiet After

The precinct was never truly quiet, but at 3 a.m., it was as close as it got. Lucy Chen sat at her desk, staring at the paperwork that never seemed to end, when Tim Bradford dropped a cup of coffee in front of her. "You look like you need this," he said, his voice low. She looked up, surprised. He was off-duty, in jeans and a dark jacket, but he’d come back anyway. "Thanks," she murmured, wrapping her hands around the warm cup. He hesitated, then sat in the chair across from her. "You did good out there tonight," he said, not quite meeting her eyes. "You didn’t hesitate. That’s what kept you alive." Lucy’s heart fluttered. "I had a good teacher." He finally looked at her, and there was something raw in his gaze. "Lucy... I’ve been meaning to say something." She set the cup down, suddenly nervous. "What is it?" He ran a hand through his hair, a rare sign of vulnerability. "I’m not good at this. But I can’t stop thinking about you. About us. Every time we’re on shift together, every time you laugh at my bad jokes... I don’t want to just be your training officer anymore." Her breath caught. She’d hoped, but she hadn’t dared to believe. "Tim..." He stood, stepping closer. "I know the rules. I know it’s complicated. But I don’t care. If you feel even half of what I feel, tell me now, because I can’t keep pretending." Lucy rose, closing the distance between them. "I’ve felt it for months. I just thought you’d never..." He cupped her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. "I’m an idiot for waiting this long." And then he kissed her, soft and slow, like he had all the time in the world. When they pulled apart, she was smiling, and for the first time in a long time, Tim was too. The paperwork could wait. The night was theirs.
