The stone face of the Fourth Hokage loomed over the village, its eyes gazing into the distance. On its head, two figures sat side by side, their silhouettes outlined against the setting sun. Naruto Uzumaki dangled his legs over the edge, a faint smile on his lips. Beside him, Sasuke Uchiha sat rigid, his arms resting on his knees, his dark eyes fixed on the horizon.

For a long time, neither spoke. The wind carried the sounds of the village below—children laughing, vendors calling out—but up here, it was quiet. Naruto’s smile faded as he glanced at Sasuke.

“Hey, Sasuke,” he said softly, his voice carrying a weight that rarely touched it. “Do you remember our first mission together? The one with the demon brothers?”

Sasuke’s jaw tightened. “I remember.”

“You were so cool, saving Sakura and me like that. I was so jealous.” Naruto chuckled, but it was hollow. “I thought you had everything—skill, talent, a clan. I had nothing. But that day, I realized something.”

Sasuke turned his head slightly, listening.

“I didn’t want to be like you,” Naruto continued, his blue eyes shimmering. “I wanted to beat you. To prove that I could be strong on my own. But later… after everything… I realized that wasn’t it at all.” He paused, his hands gripping his orange jumpsuit. “I just wanted you to acknowledge me. As a friend. As a brother.”

The word hung in the air. Sasuke’s breath caught.

“I used to dream of bringing you back,” Naruto said, his voice cracking. “Every time I failed, I convinced myself I’d try harder. But deep down, I was scared. Scared that you’d never come back. That I’d never get to sit here with you like this.”

Sasuke’s eyes softened. He remembered the same dreams—of a loud, persistent idiot who never gave up on him. The memory burned like a brand.

“I was jealous of you too,” Sasuke said, his voice barely above a whisper. Naruto looked at him, surprised. “You had bonds. Everyone loved you. I had only hatred and revenge. You made me feel like I was missing something. And I hated you for it.”

Naruto’s eyes widened.

“But I also admired you,” Sasuke added quickly, his gaze dropping. “Your strength—not the physical kind. Your heart. You never broke. Even when I pushed you away, you kept reaching out.” He turned to face Naruto fully. “I don’t deserve a friend like you.”

Naruto’s eyes glistened. He punched Sasuke’s shoulder lightly. “Shut up, you jerk. Friendship isn’t about deserving. It’s about being there. And I’ll always be there for you. That’s my nindo, my ninja way.”

Sasuke’s lip twitched—almost a smile. He looked away, but Naruto saw the rare emotion flicker in his eyes.

They fell into silence again, but it was comfortable now. The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple. Naruto leaned back, his hand brushing Sasuke’s.

“Thank you,” Sasuke murmured.

Naruto smiled, bright and genuine. “Anytime, teme.”

And in the quiet of the evening, the unspoken bond between them felt stronger than ever.
