The war was over, but Zuko still felt the weight of a thousand battles in his chest. As Fire Lord, he sat in the great hall, surrounded by scrolls and reports, the golden throne colder than he had ever imagined. The door creaked open, and Iroh entered with a knowing smile.

“Nephew, you have been staring at the same ledger for an hour. Even the turtle ducks have noticed your gloom.”

Zuko sighed, rubbing his temples. “Uncle, there is so much to rebuild. The Fire Nation, the colonies, the trust of the world. I cannot afford to rest.”

“No, but you can afford to eat,” Iroh said, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Come. There is someone I want you to meet.”

Reluctantly, Zuko followed his uncle through the palace gardens, where the air was thick with the scent of jasmine. There, kneeling by a bed of golden lilies, was a young woman with hair the color of autumn leaves. She looked up, her amber eyes warm and steady.

“Fire Lord Zuko,” she said, bowing her head. “I am Elisabet. Your uncle told me you were in need of a gardener.”

Zuko blinked. “A gardener? I did not request…”

“Ah, but you did,” Iroh chimed in. “You said the palace grounds were a reminder of the past. Elisabet has a gift for growing things—even in ashes.”

The young woman smiled, and something in Zuko’s chest stirred. Over the following weeks, he found himself drawn to the gardens more and more. Elisabet showed him how to nurture fragile seedlings, her hands gentle and sure. He watched her coax life from the scorched earth, and slowly, she coaxed warmth back into his heart.

One afternoon, as the sun dipped low, she caught him staring. “You have a curious look, Fire Lord.”

“Zuko,” he corrected softly. “Please, call me Zuko.”

She tilted her head. “Very well, Zuko. Why do you watch me so closely?”

He hesitated, then knelt beside her. “Because you make the world seem less heavy. When I am with you, I forget I am Fire Lord—I am just a boy who used to chase turtle ducks with his mother.”

Elisabet’s cheeks flushed. “You are far from a boy, Zuko. You are a man who has fought for his honor, and now you fight for peace. It is a beautiful thing to witness.”

Their eyes met, and the air between them shimmered with something unspoken. She reached out and gently touched his scarred cheek. “This does not make you less worthy of love. It makes you a survivor.”

Zuko’s breath caught. He took her hand, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “I never thought I would find someone who sees past the crown and the fire.”

“I see the man who plants flowers,” she whispered.

Just then, a boisterous voice shattered the moment. “Zuko! There you are! We’ve been looking everywhere!” Sokka burst into the garden, followed by Aang, Katara, Toph, Appa, and Momo. Sokka froze, taking in the scene. “Oh. Were we interrupting something?”

Katara elbowed him. “Sokka! He’s clearly busy.”

Toph stomped her foot, grinning. “He’s not busy, he’s blushing. I can feel it from here.”

Zuko shot them a glare, but Elisabet laughed, a sound like wind chimes. “You must be the famous friends I’ve heard about. I’m Elisabet.”

Aang bounded over, his eyes bright. “Nice to meet you! Are you a bender?”

“No, I’m just a gardener,” she said. “But I like to think I grow hope.”

Iroh appeared at the entrance, chuckling. “See, Zuko? I told you she was special.”

That evening, the group shared a meal in the palace courtyard. Appa munched on hay, Momo perched on Sokka’s shoulder, and the conversation flowed with laughter. Zuko found himself seated beside Elisabet, their shoulders brushing. She passed him a plate of fruit, and their fingers lingered.

Later, as the stars emerged, she walked with him through the moonlit gardens. “You have a good heart, Zuko,” she said softly. “I see it in every seed you plant, every apology you offer your people. I am honored to stand beside you.”

He stopped, turning to face her. “Elisabet, I—” he faltered, then took a steadying breath. “I have never been good with words. But with you, I feel like I can be better. Not just a Fire Lord, but a man worth loving.”

She smiled, stepping closer. “You already are.” And for the first time in his life, Zuko did not hesitate. He leaned in and kissed her, gentle and warm, as the fire lilies bloomed around them.

From the palace balcony, Iroh watched with a contented smile, raising his cup of tea to the stars. “Love,” he murmured, “is the truest fire of all.”
