Coffee and Coincidences
NCT's Jaehyun and Doyoung, on a date at a cafe, are approached by ZB1's Gyuvin and Quanrui, who are also on a date. Despite initial awkwardness, the two couples hit it off and become close friends, supporting each other through idol life.
The afternoon sun streamed through the large windows of the cozy café, casting warm rectangles of light on the wooden floor. Jeong Jaehyun leaned back in his chair, nursing a latte, while Kim Doyoung opposite him was already halfway through his second macchiato.
“You’re going to buzz right off that chair if you keep drinking caffeine like water,” Jaehyun said, a teasing smile on his lips.
Doyoung waved a dismissive hand. “I need it. This ‘relaxing date’ idea of yours is making me sleepy.” He took another sip, eyes crinkling. “But I guess I can tolerate your company for a little longer.”
Jaehyun reached across the table, fingers brushing Doyoung’s. “You love my company.”
“Maybe,” Doyoung conceded, turning his hand to interlace their fingers.
A few tables away, Kim Gyuvin was animatedly describing his latest dance challenge to Shen Quanrui, who listened with a patient, fond expression.
“And then I tripped over my own feet, but I pretended it was part of the choreography! Did you see the video?” Gyuvin gesticulated, nearly knocking over his iced Americano.
Quanrui steadied the cup. “I saw it. You recovered well. Very smooth.” He deadpanned, but his eyes betrayed amusement.
Gyuvin beamed. “See? I’m a natural performer.”
“Or a natural disaster,” Quanrui muttered, but the corners of his mouth tugged upward.
Gyuvin pouted. “You’re supposed to compliment me, not tease me.”
“I did compliment you. I said you recovered well.” Quanrui’s voice was flat, but he reached under the table to squeeze Gyuvin’s hand briefly.
Suddenly, Gyuvin’s train of thought derailed. “Oh! That guy over there—isn’t he that famous NCT member? Jaehyun?” He whispered loudly, pointing discreetly.
Quanrui followed his gaze. “Yes, that’s Jaehyun. And that’s Doyoung. They’re both NCT.”
Gyuvin’s eyes widened. “We should say hi! We’re rookies; it’s good to network, right?” Before Quanrui could protest, Gyuvin was already on his feet, striding over.
Quanrui sighed, grabbed their drinks, and followed.
“Excuse me! Hello! I’m Kim Gyuvin from ZB1, and this is Shen Quanrui.” Gyuvin bowed enthusiastically.
Jaehyun and Doyoung looked up, startled. Doyoung recovered first, offering a polite smile. “Oh, hi! We know who you are. You guys have been doing amazing.”
“Thank you!” Gyuvin chirped. “We’re huge fans! Can we sit with you?”
Quanrui shot Gyuvin a look that said ‘too forward,’ but Gyuvin ignored it.
Jaehyun glanced at Doyoung, who shrugged. “Sure, pull up chairs.”
Soon the four were seated together, an awkward tension hanging in the air. Doyoung, ever the social butterfly, broke the ice. “So, what brings you here? Date?” He winked.
Gyuvin blushed. “Is it that obvious?”
“A little,” Jaehyun said, a hint of warmth in his voice. “But don’t worry, we’re on one too.”
“Really?” Gyuvin’s eyes sparkled. “That’s so cute! How long have you two been together?”
“About three years now,” Doyoung said casually, but his hand sought Jaehyun’s under the table.
“Wow! That’s long!” Gyuvin turned to Quanrui. “We’ve only been dating for six months.”
Quanrui nodded silently, taking a sip of his drink.
Jaehyun observed the dynamic. Gyuvin was bubbly and talkative, while Quanrui was reserved. He sensed Quanrui might be uncomfortable. “So, Quanrui, what do you think of this café? We came here because Doyoung said they have the best matcha.”
Quanrui blinked, surprised at being addressed directly. “It’s… nice. The coffee is good.”
“Just good?” Gyuvin interjected. “His Americano is amazing! I tried it.”
“You tried it and made a face,” Quanrui said dryly.
“Because it’s bitter! But I respect it.” Gyuvin grinned.
Doyoung laughed. “You two are adorable. Reminds me of us when we first started dating. Jaehyun was so quiet, and I did all the talking.”
“I’m still quiet,” Jaehyun pointed out.
“Yes, but now you’re quiet with me. That’s different.” Doyoung squeezed his hand.
The conversation flowed more easily after that. They chatted about their groups, their schedules, and the absurdity of idol life. Gyuvin asked for advice on handling stage fright. Doyoung shared a funny anecdote about Jaehyun falling asleep during a vlive.
Time slipped away. The café began to empty as the evening approached.
“We should probably head out,” Jaehyun said, glancing at his watch. “We have a schedule tomorrow.”
“Us too,” Gyuvin said reluctantly. “But this was so fun! Can we exchange numbers? Maybe we can double date again?”
Doyoung and Jaehyun exchanged a look. “Sure, why not?” Doyoung pulled out his phone.
As they said their goodbyes, Gyuvin hugged each of them enthusiastically. Quanrui gave a polite bow, but a small smile graced his lips.
Walking to their car, Gyuvin bounced beside Quanrui. “That was great! They’re so nice. And Jaehyun is even more handsome in person, don’t you think?”
Quanrui snorted. “Careful, I might get jealous.”
Gyuvin stopped, grabbing Quanrui’s arm. “You know you’re the only one for me.” He leaned in and kissed his cheek. “But for the record, you’re more handsome.”
Quanrui’s ears turned red. “Let’s go home.”
Meanwhile, in Jaehyun’s car, Doyoung buckled his seatbelt. “They’re sweet. I’m glad we met them.”
Jaehyun started the engine. “Yeah. Gyuvin is like a puppy.”
“And Quanrui is like a cat,” Doyoung added. “They balance each other out.”
“Like us?” Jaehyun asked, glancing at him.
Doyoung smirked. “Exactly like us.” He reached over to pat Jaehyun’s thigh. “Now drive, we have an early morning.”
Jaehyun put the car in gear. “Love you.”
“Love you too. Now focus on the road, Casanova.”
The car pulled out of the parking lot, the warm glow of the café fading in the rearview mirror. Two couples, brought together by chance, had found a new connection. And maybe, in a world of busy schedules and flashing cameras, a shared coffee and a few laughs were all it took to start a beautiful friendship.
Over the next few weeks, their group chat grew active. Gyuvin sent memes and dance videos; Doyoung replied with witty remarks; Jaehyun occasional reactions with a thumbs-up; Quanrui lurked but occasionally posted a funny cat video. They planned another meetup, this time at a karaoke room.
Gyuvin dominated the mic, singing NCT songs at the top of his lungs. Jaehyun and Doyoung duetted on a ballad, harmonizing beautifully. Quanrui, coaxed by Gyuvin, sang a soft Chinese song that left everyone silent in appreciation.
“You have a great voice,” Doyoung told him afterward.
Quanrui ducked his head. “Thank you.”
“See? I told you you’re amazing!” Gyuvin slung an arm around him.
As the night ended, they took a group photo. Gyuvin insisted on a silly pose, and the result was a picture of four smiling faces, arms around each other, genuine happiness radiating off them.
In the months that followed, they supported each other’s comebacks, sent coffee trucks to music shows, and cheered from the sidelines. Their friendship, born in a café, blossomed into something solid and warm. And though their romantic relationships remained private, within that circle of four, they found acceptance and understanding.
One evening, after a particularly exhausting week, Doyoung texted the group: “Craving that café again. Who’s in?”
Gyuvin replied instantly: “Me! Me! Quanrui says yes.”
Jaehyun: “I’ll drive. Same time tomorrow?”
Quanrui: “See you there.”
The next afternoon, they met again at the same café. The same table by the window was empty, as if waiting for them. They ordered their usual drinks, and conversation flowed like old friends.
“Remember when we first met?” Gyuvin said, stirring his drink. “I was so nervous.”
“You were,” Quanrui agreed. “But you charged ahead anyway.”
“Because I had a good feeling!” Gyuvin insisted.
Doyoung chuckled. “I’m glad you did. We’ve become good friends.”
Jaehyun nodded. “It’s nice to have people who understand the idol life.”
They talked about future plans, dreams, and fears. The café’s ambience wrapped around them like a cozy blanket. Outside, the city buzzed, but inside, time stood still.
As they parted, Gyuvin gave each a hug. “Next time, our place! We’ll cook for you.”
“I can’t wait to see that,” Doyoung teased. “Don’t burn the kitchen.”
“No promises!” Gyuvin laughed.
Driving home, Jaehyun glanced at Doyoung, who was scrolling through his phone, smiling.
“What are you looking at?”
“Pictures from today. Look, this one of Quanrui smiling? He looks so happy.”
Jaehyun peered at the photo. “You captured a good moment.”
Doyoung put down the phone. “We’re lucky, aren’t we?”
“To have them?” Jaehyun asked.
“To have each other. And to have found friends who get it.”
Jaehyun reached over and took Doyoung’s hand. “Yeah. We are.”
The car hummed along the road, heading home. Behind them, the café lights faded into the night, but the warmth of new friendships lingered on.
And so, four idols, two couples, became an unexpected quartet. In a world where relationships were often hidden, they found solace in each other’s company. No cameras, no fans, no pressure—just coffee, laughter, and the quiet understanding that some connections are simply meant to be.
