The evening air was cool against Sieun’s skin, carrying the faint scent of rain from the earlier downpour. He sat on the edge of the school rooftop, his legs dangling over the side, watching the city lights flicker to life below. His bruised knuckles throbbed dully, a reminder of the fight he had barely won that afternoon. He didn’t flinch when he heard the soft footsteps behind him—he knew who it was.

“You shouldn’t be up here alone,” Suho said, his voice low and steady. He didn’t wait for permission; he simply sat down beside Sieun, close enough that their shoulders almost touched. The warmth radiating from Suho’s body was a stark contrast to the chilly wind.

Sieun didn’t look at him. “I’m fine.”

“Your hands are shaking.” Suho reached out, gently taking one of Sieun’s hands. Sieun tensed but didn’t pull away. Suho’s fingers were calloused but careful as he examined the raw skin over Sieun’s knuckles. “You pushed yourself too hard again.”

“It was necessary.”

“It always is with you.” There was no accusation in Suho’s tone, only a quiet understanding that made Sieun’s chest ache. He finally turned his head, meeting Suho’s dark eyes. In the dim light, Suho’s face was half-shadowed, but Sieun could see the concern etched there.

“Why do you keep coming after me?” Sieun asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “I never asked for your help.”

Suho’s lips curved into a faint, almost sad smile. “Because you need it. And because I want to.”

Sieun’s heart stuttered. He looked away, staring at the distant horizon. “I don’t know how to let people in.”

“I know.” Suho shifted closer, his hand still holding Sieun’s. He brushed his thumb over Sieun’s knuckles, a soothing motion. “But you’re trying. I see it. Even if you don’t.”

Silence stretched between them, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was filled with unspoken words, with the weight of everything they had been through side by side. Sieun felt a lump form in his throat. He hated feeling vulnerable, but with Suho, it was different—safer.

“I was scared today,” Sieun admitted, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. “When that guy had a knife. I thought….” He trailed off, unable to finish.

Suho’s grip tightened. “I’m here. I’ll always be here.”

Something inside Sieun cracked. He turned fully, facing Suho. “Why? Why do you care so much?”

Suho’s gaze held his, unwavering. “Because you’re the only one who sees me for who I am. Because when you fight, you fight for everyone but yourself. And I want to be the one you let fight for you.” He paused, his voice dropping even lower. “Because I love you, Sieun.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and terrifying. Sieun’s breath caught. He had never heard anyone say that to him before—not like this, not with such raw honesty. His eyes burned, but he refused to cry.

“I don’t know how to do this,” Sieun said, his voice shaking. “I don’t know how to love someone back.”

“That’s okay.” Suho reached up, cupping Sieun’s cheek. His hand was warm, grounding. “We can figure it out together. I’m not going anywhere.”

Sieun leaned into the touch, closing his eyes. He felt Suho’s forehead press against his, their breaths mingling. It was intimate, more intimate than any fight or victory. His heart pounded so loudly he was sure Suho could hear it.

Slowly, hesitantly, Sieun tilted his head. Their lips met in a soft, tentative kiss. It was gentle, almost questioning—as if seeking permission. Sieun’s hand came up to grip Suho’s shirt, anchoring himself. Suho deepened the kiss slowly, his arm wrapping around Sieun’s waist, pulling him closer.

When they broke apart, they were both breathing a little heavier. Sieun’s cheeks were flushed, a rare sight that made Suho’s heart swell.

“I don’t know what I’m doing,” Sieun admitted.

“Neither do I,” Suho said with a small laugh. “But we’ll figure it out. One step at a time.”

They sat in comfortable silence, Suho’s arm still around Sieun’s waist. The city lights continued to twinkle below, indifferent to the monumental shift that had just occurred between them. But on that rooftop, two souls had found each other, and that was enough.

Later, as they walked home together, their hands brushed frequently. Finally, Suho laced their fingers together, and Sieun let him. He didn’t pull away. He squeezed back, just once, but it was a promise.

It was a beginning.
