The forest was wrong. Luz knew it the moment she stepped off the beaten path, the familiar greens of the Boiling Isles giving way to a sickly gray. The trees were twisted, their bark weeping a black sap that hissed as it hit the ground. A wrongness permeated the air, thick and heavy, like the static before a storm.

"Luz!" Amity's voice cut through the gloom, sharp with worry. "Where are you going? We should head back—the Emperor's Coven patrols are getting closer."

But Luz couldn't stop. Something pulsed ahead, a rhythmic beat that vibrated in her chest. It called to the Titan's magic inside her, a pull she couldn't resist.

"Just a little further," Luz called over her shoulder, her voice too bright for the oppressive silence. "I think there's an old temple or something."

Amity sighed, her footsteps quickening to catch up. "You're impossible."

They found it. Not a temple, but a maw. A cavern yawned in the hillside, lined with jagged teeth of obsidian. The air around it shimmered, and Luz felt a hunger that wasn't her own—a primal, ancient need that reached out and wrapped around her like a fist.

"Luz, stop!" Amity grabbed her wrist, but Luz was already moving forward, her feet carrying her toward the darkness.

"I have to see," Luz whispered, her eyes fixed on the void. She pulled free, stepping into the mouth of the cave. The moment she crossed the threshold, the teeth ground shut behind her, sealing them in absolute black.

"Luz!" Amity's scream was muffled, distant, and then the floor gave way. Luz fell, tumbling into a stomach that was not stone but living flesh. The walls were slick, warm, contracting around her. She gasped, the air thick with the smell of decay and stomach acid.

"No, no, no—" Luz scrambled, her fingers finding purchase on the slimy surface, but it was like trying to climb up a throat. The creature that had swallowed them began to digest its meal. A low gurgle echoed, and the walls squeezed tighter.

Amity landed beside her, a rush of purple light from her abomination goo illuminating the nightmare. They were in a stomach—a vast, pulsating chamber of translucent membrane. Through the walls, they could see the bones of previous victims, slowly dissolving.

"We're inside a Slitherbeast," Amity breathed, her voice shaking. "A variant that mimics terrain. It's going to... absorb us."

Luz's heart hammered. She should have listened. She always dragged Amity into danger. "I'm sorry," she whispered, tears burning her eyes.

"Don't. Don't apologize." Amity's hand found hers, squeezing tight. "We're getting out of here."

But the stomach had other ideas. Acid began to pool around their ankles, burning. Luz cried out as it ate through her boot. Amity conjured an abomination shield, but the acid was stronger, eating through the goo like paper.

"I can't hold it," Amity panted, sweat dripping down her face.

Luz looked at her, at the fierce determination in her gold eyes, and felt a cold certainty settle in her bones. She wouldn't let Amity die here. She reached inside herself, to the boiling glyphs carved into her soul, and pulled.

"What are you doing?" Amity shouted as Luz's body began to glow.

"Saving you."

Luz unleashed a torrent of fire, a sphere of pure heat that erupted from her hands and expanded. The stomach wall ruptured with a wet scream, and the beast convulsed. They were thrown upward, through the torn esophagus, out into the gray forest.

They landed hard on the dead earth, gasping. Luz's glyphs had gone dark, her body smoking, empty of magic.

"Luz!" Amity crawled to her, cradling her head. "You're bleeding."

Luz looked down at her chest, where a glyph had burned through her shirt and skin, leaving a dark wound. The cost of using raw Titan magic without a focus. She tried to smile, but blood bubbled on her lips.

"It was worth it," she whispered. "You're safe."

"Don't you dare," Amity sobbed, pressing her hands against the wound. "Don't you dare leave me, Luz Noceda."

But the darkness was pulling Luz under, the forest around them fading. The last thing she saw was Amity's face, beautiful and broken, as she screamed for help that was too far away.

Luz closed her eyes, and the world went silent.

She woke to warmth. A fire crackled nearby, and soft blankets cocooned her. Amity sat beside her, dark circles under her eyes, her hand wrapped around Luz's.

"You're an idiot," Amity said, her voice raw.

"But a cute idiot, right?" Luz's throat was dry, but she managed a weak grin.

Amity let out a choked laugh, then pressed her forehead to Luz's. "I thought I lost you."

"You can't get rid of me that easy." Luz squeezed her hand. "I'm sorry. I should have listened."

"Yes. You should have." Amity pulled back, her eyes serious. "But I'm not letting you explore alone ever again. Where you go, I go."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

They stayed like that, wrapped in each other, the fire casting long shadows. The forest outside still whispered with danger, but in that moment, they had each other. And that was enough to face the dark.
