A Coincidental Encounter

The afternoon sun streamed through the large windows of the cozy café, casting warm patches of light on the wooden floors. Jeong Jaehyun sat across from Kim Doyoung, nursing a caramel macchiato while Doyoung scrolled through his phone, occasionally sighing.

"You know, if you wanted to meet up, you could at least pretend to be interested in the conversation," Jaehyun teased, taking a sip of his drink.

Doyoung looked up, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. "Sorry, hyung. I was just checking something for the upcoming schedule. You know how it is."

"I do, but we're supposed to be taking a break today. No work talk, remember?"

Doyoung set down his phone and leaned back, stretching his arms above his head. "Fine, fine. So, what do you want to talk about?"

Before Jaehyun could answer, the café door swung open, letting in a gust of fresh air. Two figures entered, chatting animatedly. One was tall and lanky, with an infectious laugh that seemed to fill the room. The other was shorter, with sharp features and a confident stride.

"Look, there's a table by the window!" the taller one exclaimed, pointing.

"Gyuvin-ah, you're so loud," the shorter one said, though his smile betrayed his fondness.

Jaehyun and Doyoung glanced over. The newcomers were clearly idols — their styling and aura gave it away. Jaehyun recognized them from the recent reality shows he'd watched during breaks: Kim Gyuvin and Shen Quanrui, known as Ricky, from ZB1.

Gyuvin and Ricky settled into the table next to theirs, continuing their lively discussion about something that made Gyuvin laugh so hard he nearly knocked over a sugar dispenser.

"They're cute," Doyoung murmured, his eyes lingering on Ricky as he steadied the sugar dispenser with a gentle hand.

Jaehyun raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You're interested?"

"No! I just meant... they seem like good friends. That's all." Doyoung's cheeks flushed slightly.

Just then, Gyuvin turned his head and caught Doyoung's gaze. He blinked, then broke into a wide grin. "Oh! You're Doyoung sunbaenim and Jaehyun sunbaenim from NCT, right?"

Ricky looked up, his eyes widening in recognition. "Wow, it really is you! We're big fans. I mean, as trainees, we always watched your performances."

Jaehyun smiled warmly. "Thank you. And you must be Gyuvin and Ricky from ZB1? Congratulations on your debut."

Gyuvin beamed. "Thank you! We actually just finished recording today and decided to grab a bite."

Doyoung nodded politely. "Please, sit with us if you'd like. It's nice to meet juniors in the industry."

Ricky glanced at Gyuvin, who was already scooting his chair closer. "Are you sure we won't bother you?" Ricky asked, though his eyes sparkled with excitement.

"Not at all," Jaehyun said, pulling out a chair for them. "We were just taking a break from our own schedules."

The four of them rearranged themselves, Gyuvin next to Doyoung and Ricky next to Jaehyun. As the initial awkwardness faded, conversation flowed easily. They talked about music, favorite songs, and the joys and struggles of idol life.

Gyuvin, always the chatterbox, dominated much of the talk, but Ricky would interject with dry wit that made Jaehyun chuckle. Doyoung found himself drawn to Ricky's calm demeanor and sharp observations.

"So, Doyoung sunbaenim, what's your favorite part of being an idol?" Ricky asked, turning to him with genuine curiosity.

Doyoung thought for a moment. "I think it's the connection with fans. When we perform and see them singing along, it makes everything worth it."

Ricky nodded slowly. "I feel that too. It's amazing how music can bring people together."

Gyuvin nudged Ricky. "And what about your favorite part, Ricky?"

Ricky shot him a look. "I was asking him, but okay. I guess the creative process. Writing lyrics, composing — being able to express myself."

"Oh, you write?" Jaehyun leaned in. "I've been working on some songs myself. It's challenging but rewarding."

"Maybe we could exchange ideas sometime," Ricky suggested, a hint of shyness in his voice.

"I'd like that," Jaehyun replied, and their eyes met, a small smile passing between them.

Meanwhile, Gyuvin and Doyoung had launched into a heated debate about the best ramen flavor. Gyuvin insisted it was kimchi, while Doyoung stood by his love for jjajangmyeon ramen.

"But kimchi ramen has that perfect amount of spice!" Gyuvin argued, waving his hands.

"And jjajangmyeon ramen has the savory depth that you can't get from just spice," Doyoung countered, grinning.

They both laughed, realizing they had forgotten their surroundings. Ricky and Jaehyun watched them, amused.

"They're like kids," Ricky muttered, but his eyes were soft.

Jaehyun nodded. "Some things never change. It's nice to see people so passionate about the simple things."

As the afternoon turned into evening, the café began to empty. Reluctantly, they realized they had to leave.

"We should do this again," Gyuvin said, almost bouncing with enthusiasm. "Maybe grab dinner next time?"

"We'd love to," Doyoung said, surprising even himself with how much he meant it.

Ricky took out his phone. "Let's exchange numbers?"

They swapped contacts, promising to keep in touch. As they parted ways at the café door, Jaehyun noticed Doyoung's lingering gaze on Ricky's retreating form.

"You really liked him, huh?" Jaehyun teased softly.

Doyoung's face reddened. "I don't know what you're talking about. He's just... interesting."

"Sure, sure." Jaehyun draped an arm around his shoulder. "Come on, let's go before you start composing a love song."

"Yah!"

But as they walked away, Doyoung couldn't help but glance back one more time. And across the street, Ricky happened to look back too. They shared a quick smile before both turned away, their hearts a little lighter.

Weeks later, a new song collaboration between NCT's Doyoung and ZB1's Ricky was announced, much to the delight of fans. In interviews, they would only say it came from a chance meeting at a café. And whenever someone brought up that day, Gyuvin would grin and say, "I guess fate works in mysterious ways."

And perhaps it did.
