Jaehyun had been working at the cozy corner café for three months now, and in that time, he’d learned two things: how to make a perfect caramel macchiato, and that Kim Doyoung was a menace to his heart.

It started innocently enough. Doyoung would walk in every morning at exactly 7:15 AM, order a black coffee with a shot of espresso, and sit at the same table by the window. He’d tap his fingers on the ceramic mug while reading, his glasses slightly askew, and Jaehyun would find himself inventing reasons to walk past his table.

“Refill?” Jaehyun asked, trying to sound casual. His voice cracked slightly on the last syllable, and he winced internally.

Doyoung looked up from his book, a small smile playing at the corner of his lips. “I haven’t finished this one yet.” He gestured to his nearly full cup.

“Right. Of course. Sorry.” Jaehyun felt his ears burn. He turned to escape, but Doyoung’s voice stopped him.

“Actually, you could tell me your name. I see you every day, and I don’t know it.”

Jaehyun turned back, heart thumping. “Jaehyun. I’m Jaehyun.”

“Doyoung.” He extended a hand, and Jaehyun shook it, trying not to notice how soft Doyoung’s palm was. “Nice to meet you, Jaehyun.”

From then on, their morning interactions became a ritual. Doyoung would arrive, order his black coffee with an extra shot, and Jaehyun would deliver it with a smile. Sometimes Doyoung would ask for a recommendation, and Jaehyun would suggest a pastry or a new drink, always careful to include something that would make Doyoung’s eyes light up.

It was on a rainy Tuesday that Jaehyun’s carefully constructed composure crumbled.

The café was empty except for Doyoung, who had stayed longer than usual, nursing a chai latte that Jaehyun had convinced him to try. The rain pattered against the windows, and the soft jazz playing from the speakers seemed to wrap the room in a cozy blanket.

“You’re staring,” Doyoung said, not looking up from his book.

Jaehyun nearly dropped the cup he was drying. “I—what? No, I was just—checking if you needed anything.”

Doyoung closed his book and fixed Jaehyun with a knowing look. “You always check on me. Multiple times. Is there something on my face?”

“No! I mean, no, there’s nothing.” Jaehyun’s brain short-circuited. “I just… like making sure you’re happy.”

The words hung in the air between them.

Doyoung’s expression softened. “You’re very sweet, Jaehyun. But you don’t have to hover. I’m happy just being here.”

Jaehyun’s heart soared. “I could make you happier.” The words slipped out before he could stop them, and he immediately felt his face flush. “I mean—I could make you another drink? Something special?”

Doyoung laughed, a light, melodic sound that Jaehyun wanted to bottle. “Okay. Surprise me.”

Jaehyun rushed behind the counter, his hands trembling slightly. He was going to make Doyoung the best drink he’d ever tasted. He combined white chocolate, raspberry syrup, and a shot of espresso, topping it with steamed milk and a delicate foam art of a heart. He carried it to Doyoung’s table with the care of someone holding a treasure.

“A white chocolate raspberry latte,” Jaehyun said, placing it in front of Doyoung. “I call it ‘Sweet Surprise’.”

Doyoung raised an eyebrow, then took a sip. His eyes closed momentarily, and when they opened, they were bright. “This is incredible. You have to put this on the menu.”

Jaehyun beamed. “It’s a secret recipe. Only for special customers.”

“Am I special?”

“Very.”

The rain continued to fall, but inside the café, the sun was shining.

The next week, Jaehyun found a note tucked under his windshield wiper. It was a simple piece of paper, folded neatly, with a single line: “Care to join me for a real coffee? There’s a place I know. – Doyoung”

Jaehyun’s hands shook as he dialed the number scrawled at the bottom. Doyoung picked up on the second ring.

“I was wondering when you’d call.”

“Is this a date?” Jaehyun asked, too excited to be smooth.

“Only if you want it to be.”

“I want it to be.”

They met at a small café on the other side of town, one that had mismatched furniture and a cat that lounged on the windowsill. Doyoung was already there, wearing a soft sweater that made him look even more endearing. Jaehyun sat across from him, feeling like he was in a dream.

They talked for hours. About their jobs (Doyoung was a music producer, which explained the headphones he always wore), their hobbies (Jaehyun played piano, Doyoung sang in the shower), and their dreams (Jaehyun wanted to open his own café; Doyoung wanted to produce an album that moved people).

“I feel like I’ve known you forever,” Doyoung admitted, stirring his coffee absently.

“Maybe in another life we were baristas together,” Jaehyun joked.

“Or maybe we were just waiting for this one.”

Jaehyun reached across the table and took Doyoung’s hand. “I’m glad we didn’t have to wait any longer.”

From that day on, Doyoung became a permanent fixture at Jaehyun’s café, but now he sat behind the counter with Jaehyun, learning to make drinks and laughing at his failed attempts at foam art. The regulars noticed the change, the way the café seemed brighter, the music happier.

One evening, as they were closing up, Doyoung wiped down the counter while Jaehyun counted the till. “Hey, Jaehyun?”

“Yeah?”

“I love you.”

The words were simple, but they carried the weight of every morning coffee, every shared laugh, every stolen glance. Jaehyun set down the cash and walked over to Doyoung, pulling him into a hug.

“I love you too. Since the first time you ordered that black coffee with an extra shot.”

Doyoung laughed. “I knew you were staring for a reason.”

Jaehyun kissed him then, a soft, sweet kiss that tasted like chocolate and promise. When they pulled apart, Doyoung’s cheeks were pink.

“So,” Doyoung said, “does this mean I get free coffee for life?”

“You get everything for life.”

And as the last light of the day filtered through the café windows, Jaehyun knew he had found his perfect blend.
