The Boy from IT
A music student keeps crossing paths with the quiet IT boy whose name she never learns, and their silent connection grows into a love story told in broken laptops, playlists, and one final song.
Lia first saw him in the basement computer lab, the one that smelled like stale coffee and overheated circuits. She was there because her laptop had died three days before the band's biggest showcase, and her music friends—Sofia, Leo, and Ben—had threatened to tie her to a chair until she got it fixed. 'You can't play a broken laptop,' Sofia had said. 'And you can't sing about heartbreak if you're the one causing it.'
So Lia went. The boy behind the counter had dark hair that fell over his forehead and headphones around his neck. He didn't look up when she set the laptop down. He just pulled it toward him, fingers moving over the keyboard like he was playing an instrument only he could hear.
'It won't turn on,' Lia said.
He nodded. A minute later, he turned the laptop toward her. The screen glowed. On the desktop, he had left a new folder. It was called 'For the girl who writes songs.' Inside was a playlist. No name. No note.
Lia's heart did something stupid. She looked up, but he was already helping someone else. She didn't ask his name. She was too busy trying to breathe.
After that, she found reasons to go back. A flickering keyboard. A software update. A corrupted file she had definitely not corrupted on purpose. Each time, he fixed it without a word. And each time, he left something small: a playlist, a meme about cellists, a tip for recording vocals without feedback. She started leaving things too. A sticky note with a lyric. A drawing of a guitar. A candy bar.
Her friends noticed. 'You're glowing,' Leo said during practice. 'It's the IT guy,' Sofia sang. 'You don't even know his name.'
'I know his hands,' Lia said. 'I know he listens to the same sad indie bands I do. I know he fixes things.'
'That's not a name,' Ben said.
'I know.'
She wrote a song about him anyway. She called it 'The Boy from IT.' It was about quiet boys with kind eyes and the terror of wanting something you can't label. She practiced it until her fingers ached. She imagined singing it to him. She imagined him hearing his own silence turned into music.
The night of the showcase, the auditorium was packed. Lia's hands shook. Sofia squeezed her shoulder. 'He's here,' she whispered. 'Back row. Headphones around his neck.'
Lia looked. There he was. The boy from IT. He had come.
She stepped into the light. She played the opening chords. Then she sang. She sang about broken laptops and playlists and the way a stranger can become the center of your universe without ever telling you his name. She sang until her voice cracked. She sang until she forgot the crowd and only saw him.
When the last note faded, the room was silent. Then applause. But Lia only watched him. He was standing. He was walking toward the stage.
He stopped at the edge. His face was flushed. He looked at her like she was a song he had been trying to write his whole life.
'What's your name?' Lia asked. Her voice was barely a whisper.
He smiled. 'Noah.'
'Noah,' she repeated. It felt like a chorus.
'I've known your name since the first day,' he said. 'Lia. It was on your student ID. I just... I didn't think you'd want to know mine.'
She laughed, and it came out wet. 'I've been in love with you for three months, Noah. I think I want to know everything.'
He reached for her hand. His fingers were warm. 'I made you a playlist,' he said. 'For after the show. It's called 'For the girl who finally asked.'
Lia pulled him onto the stage. Her friends cheered. The lights were too bright. Her heart was too full. But when Noah leaned in and kissed her, soft and certain, she finally understood: some things don't need a name to be real. They just need someone brave enough to ask.
And she had. Finally.
After the show, they sat on the steps outside the auditorium, sharing earbuds. The playlist was perfect. Every song was about finding something you thought you'd lost. Noah's shoulder was warm against hers. Sofia, Leo, and Ben were packing up inside, pretending not to watch.
'So,' Noah said. 'What happens now?'
Lia smiled. 'Now we write the next song.'
'About what?'
'About a boy from IT and a girl who finally learned his name.'
He kissed her again. And for the first time in months, Lia didn't feel like a broken machine waiting to be fixed. She felt like music.
