The Great Gaang Cook-Off

The Gaang tries to cook a celebratory dinner for Zuko at the Jasmine Dragon, but their combined incompetence—Sokka's questionable recipes, Aang's overzealous airbending, Toph's destructive earthbending, and Zuko's firebending mishaps—turns the kitchen into a disaster zone. Suki saves the day, and they share a meal that, while not perfect, reminds them that family is worth a little chaos.

The war was over, but the Gaang had discovered a new battlefront: the kitchen. Specifically, the kitchen of the Jasmine Dragon, where Zuko had offered to make everyone a celebratory dinner. Unfortunately, the offer came with a catch: Zuko couldn't cook to save his life.

"Izu-mi, Izu-mi, Izu-mi," Sokka chanted under his breath as he stirred a pot of what was supposed to be seaweed noodles. The problem was that he'd added too much sea prune, and the mixture had turned a concerning shade of purple.

"Are you sure this is edible?" Katara asked, peering into the pot. Her eyebrows knit together as she wrinkled her nose. "It smells like a swamp."

"It's traditional Southern Water Tribe fare!" Sokka insisted, though he wasn't entirely convinced himself. "My grandma used to make this. I think."

Aang, who had been tasked with fanning the flames using airbending, accidentally sent a gust that knocked over a jar of fire flakes. Toph, who was 'helping' by using earthbending to grind spices, ended up pulverizing the mortar and pestle into dust.

"Oops," she said, completely unapologetic. "But hey, now we have ground mortar! Adds texture."

"That's not how cooking works!" Zuko snapped, trying to salvage his own dish—a simple fire noodle stir-fry that had somehow caught fire on three separate occasions. His face was smudged with soot, and his royal apron was singed.

Suki, the only one with any real cooking experience, had wisely stayed out of the chaos. She sat at the counter, shelling beans and watching the disaster unfold with a bemused smile. "Maybe we should order takeout," she suggested.

"No!" the rest of them shouted in unison.

It was a matter of pride. Zuko had promised a feast, and by the spirits, they would have a feast. Even if it killed them.

Katara took charge, her waterbending coming in handy to control the temperature of a boiling pot. "Aang, gentle gusts only. Toph, stop earthbending the kitchen floor—you're making the stove uneven. Sokka, for the love of the moon, put down that sea prune jar."

"But it's the secret ingredient!" Sokka protested, clutching the jar to his chest.

Zuko, meanwhile, was having a meltdown. His stir-fry was now a blackened lump, and he had somehow managed to melt a ladle. "I'm the Fire Lord! I should be able to control fire!" he yelled at the stove, as if it were a defiant general.

"You're controlling it too well," Aang said, trying to be helpful. "Maybe you need to use less aggressive fire. Like, gentle warmth?"

"Gentle warmth doesn't cook noodles!" Zuko shouted back.

"Sure it does," Toph said, now sitting on the floor and eating raw flour. "Just leave them in hot water long enough."

"That's not—" Katara sighed. "You know what, never mind."

Suki finally stood up, brushing off her hands. "Alright, everyone out. I'll handle dinner."

"But we—" Zuko started.

"Out," Suki said firmly, pointing to the door. "Go sit in the dining area. Aang, you can set the table. Toph, you're on chair placement. Sokka, no more sea prunes. Katara, supervise them. Zuko, come with me."

Zuko followed Suki, looking defeated. She handed him a knife and a cutting board. "You're going to chop these vegetables. Slowly. And don't use fire."

"I can do that," he muttered, taking the knife with the reverence of a warrior accepting a sacred blade.

An hour later, they all sat down to a surprisingly edible meal. Suki had made a simple vegetable stew with rice, and she'd let Zuko add his stir-fry vegetables on top—which, after some scraping, were still recognizable as vegetables.

"This is good!" Aang exclaimed, taking a huge bite.

"It's not burnt," Zuko admitted, almost smiling.

"And no one died!" Sokka added cheerfully. Then he took a sip from his flask and promptly spit it out. "Wait, who put sea prune juice in my water?!"

Toph smirked. "Just a little something to remind you of home."

As Sokka chased Toph around the dining table, Zuko found himself laughing. It was a rusty sound, but it was real. Katara caught his eye and smiled. "You know, for a Fire Lord, you're not so bad at this."

"Don't get used to it," he said, but the smile lingered.

Outside, the moon rose over Ba Sing Se, and inside the Jasmine Dragon, the Gaang shared a meal that was, for all its chaos, perfect.

(Twenty minutes later, Sokka accidentally set off a fire flake explosion and they had to evacuate the restaurant. But that's a story for another time.)
