The precinct was quiet, the fluorescent lights humming a low, steady drone. Elliot Stabler sat at his desk, staring at the case file but not seeing it. The image of the little girl's face, tear-streaked and hollow, was seared into his memory. They had caught the bastard, but the damage was done. He rubbed his eyes and leaned back, the chair creaking.

Across the bullpen, Olivia Benson was doing the same, her pen frozen over a report. She felt his gaze before she looked up, their eyes meeting across the space between desks. A silent acknowledgment of the weight they both carried. She gave a small, tired smile, and he returned it.

Fin walked by, dropping a stack of folders on his desk. "You two should go home. It's late."

"In a minute," Elliot said, not moving.

Fin shook his head. "Cragen's already gone. Don't stay too long." He grabbed his coat and headed out, the door clicking shut behind him.

Now it was just them. The clock on the wall read 2:47 AM. Olivia finally pushed her chair back and stood, stretching her arms above her head. Elliot watched the movement, the way her shirt pulled taut across her shoulders. He looked away quickly, a familiar heat rising in his chest.

"You okay?" she asked, her voice soft as she walked over.

"Should be asking you that."

She perched on the edge of his desk, close enough that he could smell her perfume, faint and floral. "I've been better. But we got him. That's something."

"Yeah." He set the file aside and looked up at her. In the dim light, her eyes were dark pools. He had known her for over a decade, seen her at her worst and her best, and still she managed to catch him off guard. "Liv..."

"Elliot?"

He hesitated, the words he had been holding back for years pressing against his lips. But the night felt different, charged with something unspoken. "I don't know how to say this. Not after everything. But I can't keep pretending."

Her breath hitched. "Pretending what?"

"That I don't feel this. That I don't think about you more than I should." He stood, now looking down at her. "You're my partner. My best friend. But it's more than that, and you know it."

Olivia slid off the desk, her face inches from his. "I know." Her voice was barely a whisper. "I've known for so long. But I was scared. Of ruining what we have. Of getting hurt."

"I would never hurt you."

"You already have, Elliot. Every time you pulled away. Every time you chose your family over me. I understood, but it still stung."

He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek. She leaned into his touch, eyes closing. "I'm sorry. I should have been braver. But I'm here now. If you'll have me."

She opened her eyes, and in them he saw a mixture of fear and hope. "What about the job? Captain Cragen—"

"We'll figure it out. We always do."

Then she closed the distance, her lips meeting his. The kiss was soft at first, tentative, then deepened as years of longing poured into it. Her hands fisted in his shirt, pulling him closer. When they finally broke apart, both were breathless.

"Wow," she said, a shaky laugh escaping her.

"Yeah. Wow."

He wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight. They stayed like that for a long moment, the silence comfortable. Finally, she pulled back. "We should probably go home. Get some real sleep."

"Or we could get coffee and talk. About us."

She smiled, a real smile that lit up her face. "I'd like that."

They grabbed their coats and walked out together, hands brushing. In the elevator, he took her hand fully, intertwining his fingers with hers. She rested her head on his shoulder.

When they reached the street, the cold air hit them. The city was quiet, a few cars passing. They found a 24-hour diner a block away and slid into a booth, coffee steaming between them. For the next hour, they talked—about their fears, their hopes, their boundaries. He promised to communicate better. She promised not to shut him out. They agreed to tell Cragen together, but not yet. First, they needed to be sure.

Days later, they walked into Cragen's office, hand in hand. The captain looked up, surprised, then his expression softened. "About time," he said. "Just keep it professional on the job."

"We will, Captain," Olivia said, squeezing Elliot's hand.

Fin, when he found out, just grinned. "Knew it. You two were the most oblivious detectives I've ever seen."

Months passed. They learned to balance work and love. Some cases were harder than others, but they were stronger together. Late nights at the precinct often ended with them curled up on the couch in the break room, a thin blanket covering them. And every morning, he would bring her coffee, just the way she liked it.

One night, after a tough case that hit close to home, they sat on her apartment balcony, watching the sunrise paint the sky in shades of pink and orange. She leaned into him, and he wrapped an arm around her.

"Thank you for being patient," she murmured.

"Thank you for giving me a chance."

They kissed as the city woke around them, a new day beginning—together.
