Rachel Elizabeth Dare was not easily flustered. She had faced down monsters, helped save the world, and even turned down a prophecy. But right now, sitting across from Leo Valdez in her art studio, she was feeling distinctly flustered.

Leo, for his part, seemed blissfully unaware. He was perched on a wooden stool, one leg bouncing with restless energy, his eyes darting around the room. "Okay, so how long do I have to sit still? Because I'm not great with, you know, stillness. My ADHD, man. It's a thing."

"Thirty minutes," Rachel said, trying to sound professional. She had asked Leo to model for a portrait — partly because she wanted to capture his mischievous grin and spark-like eyes, and partly because she had a tiny, secret crush on him. It was ridiculous, really. He was a son of Hephaestus, a walking fire hazard, and definitely not her type. But ever since he'd fixed her favorite silver pen with a tiny dragon engraving, she'd been thinking about him more often.

"Thirty minutes?" Leo's eyes widened. "That's like a million years in Valdez time. Can't you just take a photo and paint from that?"

"I prefer live subjects. The energy is different." Rachel picked up her charcoal, already sketching the rough outline of his face. "You can talk if you want. Just don't move your head."

"Talking is my specialty. Did I ever tell you about the time I accidentally set fire to a hydra's hair gel? Classic. So there I was, out of Greek fire, and I just happened to have this industrial-strength hair product that my mom—well, not my mom mom, but you know—anyway, I figured if I lit it up, the hydra would be too busy styling its six heads to attack. And I was right! Sort of. The hydra actually started a new trend in monster salons."

Rachel laughed despite herself, her charcoal slipping slightly. "Hold still!" she said, but she was grinning. "You're making me mess up."

"You're the artist. You should be able to paint a moving target. That's skill." Leo winked, and Rachel felt her cheeks warm.

She focused on his eyes — dark brown, lively, with a hint of mischief. "What's your favorite color, Leo?" she asked, trying to distract herself.

"Fire. No, wait, that's a thing, not a color. Uh... orange? That's the color of fire. But also blue, like the supernatural flames I sometimes make. But also, like, that shade of green that's so dark it's almost black. You know?"

"That's four colors."

"I'm a complicated guy." He grinned, and she had to look down at her drawing to avoid staring.

Thirty minutes passed with Leo's rambling stories filling the room — stories about his adventures on the Argo II, embarrassing moments with Frank, and his ongoing rivalry with Festus's welding torch. When Rachel finally set down her charcoal, she felt a surprising sense of loss. She had enjoyed every second.

"Okay, you can move now." She turned the sketchbook around to show him.

Leo hopped off the stool and came closer. His expression shifted from amused to serious as he studied the drawing. It was a charcoal portrait, capturing his animated expression, the slight smirk, the intelligence in his eyes, and even the glint of mischief. "Wow," he breathed. "Rachel, this is... really good. I mean, I look like a total badass, but also, like, a person? Does that make sense?"

"You are a total badass who is also a person," Rachel said softly.

He looked up from the sketchbook, his dark eyes meeting hers. "Can I ask you something? Why did you ask me to model? I mean, out of all the demigods and mortals you know, why me?"

Rachel's heart thumped. She could feel the heat creeping up her neck. "Because you're interesting to draw. You have a lot of... movement in your face. And your eyes are really expressive." She was rambling now, and she knew it.

Leo stepped closer, his hand brushing against hers. "You're blushing."

"I'm not — okay, maybe a little." She laughed nervously.

"You know, for a mortal who can see through the Mist and hangs out with the craziest demigods, you're surprisingly easy to fluster." His voice was teasing, but there was a gentleness underneath.

"Only around certain fire-wielding geniuses."

Leo's grin softened into a genuine smile. "Can I take you out? Like, on a date? No monsters, no prophecies, just... dinner? Maybe a movie? I'll even let you draw me again if you want."

Rachel felt her face split into a grin. "I'd like that. But only if you promise not to set the restaurant on fire."

"No promises. But I'll try." He took her hand, and she felt the warmth radiating from his skin — not burning, just comfortable. "So, how about Friday?"

"Friday sounds perfect."

Leo glanced at the portrait one more time. "You know, I think this is the first time someone's captured me without setting something on fire. You're a miracle worker, Dare."

"Maybe you just bring out the best in me," she said, and she meant it.

As Leo left the studio with a spring in his step, Rachel looked at the portrait and smiled. She had a feeling that this was the beginning of something bright — and maybe a little warm.
