The last light of summer bled through the curtains, painting Lisa’s room in shades of gold and rose. She sat cross-legged on her bed, a worn paperback open in her lap, but her eyes were fixed on the window. Outside, the world was quieting down, the cicadas beginning their nightly chorus. She heard his footsteps before she saw him—a familiar rhythm on the stairs.

Nate pushed the door open without knocking, his tall frame filling the doorway. At nineteen, he had lost the boyish softness of his face, replaced by sharp angles and a hint of stubble he insisted on keeping. His dark hair was disheveled, as always, and he wore a faded t-shirt that clung to his chest. “Hey, kiddo. What are you reading?”

“Just a book,” she said, closing it quickly. She didn’t want him to see the cover—a romance novel she’d borrowed from a friend, full of longing and forbidden kisses. At fourteen, Lisa was caught between girlhood and something else, something she couldn’t name around him.

He dropped onto her bed, the mattress dipping under his weight. She felt the warmth of him, the familiar scent of soap and something uniquely his. “You okay? You’ve been quiet all day.”

“I’m fine.” She wasn’t. For weeks, she had been noticing things—the way his laugh made her stomach flip, the way she missed him when he was at work, the way her heart raced when his hand brushed hers. It was wrong, she knew it. He was her brother. But feelings don’t obey rules.

Nate reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The touch was casual, brotherly, but it sent a shiver down her spine. “You know you can talk to me, right? Whatever it is.”

“Even if it’s stupid?”

“Especially if it’s stupid.” He smiled, that lopsided grin that made her knees weak.

She took a breath. “Do you ever feel like… like there’s something missing? Like you’re supposed to be closer to someone, but you can’t?”

His smile faded. He looked at her, really looked, and she saw something flicker in his eyes—a mirror of her own turmoil. “Yeah,” he said softly. “I do.”

The air thickened. Lisa’s hands trembled as she set the book aside. “Who?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he reached for her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. They were larger, rougher, and they fit perfectly. “Lisa…” His voice was barely a whisper. “This is crazy.”

“I know.”

“We can’t.”

“I know.” Tears blurred her vision. She didn’t care. She leaned forward, and he met her halfway. Their lips touched, soft and hesitant, tasting of salt and summer. It was nothing like she had imagined—it was better. And worse. Because every second was a guilty paradise.

He pulled back first, his forehead resting against hers. “We should stop,” he breathed.

“I know.” But neither of them moved. The cicadas sang on, drowning out the world. They stayed like that, hands clasped, hearts pounding, caught in the space between what they wanted and what they were allowed.

When the moon rose, Nate finally stood. He paused at the door, his back to her. “Goodnight, Lisa.”

“Goodnight, Nate.”

He left, and she touched her lips, still burning. Outside, the night stretched endless, full of stars and secrets. She knew tomorrow would bring confusion and pain. But for now, she let herself believe that love, in all its forbidden forms, was still love. And that was something, even if it was wrong.
