The bell rang, but Jake didn't move. He sat at his desk, staring at the blank page in front of him, the words of the history exam blurring into meaningless shapes. The classroom emptied, laughter and chatter fading down the hallway. He was the last one left.

Heeseung found him there twenty minutes later. He had a way of knowing when something was wrong, even when Jake tried to hide it. "Hey," he said softly, sliding into the seat next to him. "You okay?"

Jake didn't answer. He just shook his head, a small, almost imperceptible movement. Heeseung didn't push. He sat in silence, his presence a steady warmth.

They had been friends since middle school, a group of seven bound by shared lunches and late-night gaming sessions. Jungwon, the responsible leader; Jay, the quiet observer; Sunoo, the ray of sunshine; Sunghoon, the calm one; Ni-ki, the energetic maknae; Heeseung, the hyung who always looked out for them; and Jake, the one who smiled the most but hurt the deepest.

Lately, the smile had been harder to find. The pressure of exams, the expectations from home, the constant comparison to others—it was all piling up. He felt like he was drowning in a sea of shoulds and musts, and no one could see it because he was so good at pretending.

That evening, the group met at their usual spot: the rooftop of the school building. It was their sanctuary, a place where they could be themselves. Sunoo was telling a funny story about his cat, his laughter contagious. Ni-ki was teasing Jay about a failed dance move. But Jake sat apart, his back against the railing, staring at the darkening sky.

Sunghoon noticed. He nudged Jungwon, who then caught Heeseung's eye. A silent conversation passed between them.

"Jake," Jungwon said gently, "what's going on? You've been quiet all week."

Jake opened his mouth, then closed it. Words felt like broken glass in his throat. He shrugged, forcing a smile. "Just tired."

"You're always tired," Jay said, not unkindly. "But this is different."

Ni-ki stopped teasing. The atmosphere shifted. They all looked at Jake, their eyes full of concern.

And then something inside Jake cracked. The dam he had built so carefully broke, and tears spilled down his cheeks. He tried to hide them, but Sunoo was already there, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. "It's okay," Sunoo whispered. "We're here."

They didn't ask questions. They didn't demand explanations. They just sat with him, a circle of warmth in the cold evening air. Heeseung took his hand. Sunghoon leaned his head on his shoulder. Ni-ki sat at his feet, looking up at him with wide eyes.

And Jake let himself break. He sobbed about the grades that weren't good enough, the future that terrified him, the loneliness that enveloped him even in a crowd. He spoke of his parents' disappointed sighs and his own harsh inner critic. He spoke until his voice was hoarse.

When he was done, Jungwon said, "You don't have to carry this alone. We're your friends. We're your family."

"We love you, Jake," Jay added quietly. "For who you are, not for what you achieve."

They stayed on the rooftop until the stars came out. Sunoo made a joke, and this time, Jake laughed—a real laugh, watery but genuine. Ni-ki started a silly dance, and one by one, they all joined in, clumsy and uncoordinated, but together.

As they walked home, Heeseung fell into step beside Jake. "I'm proud of you," he said.

"For failing?" Jake asked bitterly.

"For letting us in," Heeseung replied. "That takes more courage than any exam."

Jake looked at his friends, their silhouettes lit by streetlamps, their voices a comforting hum. The weight was still there, but it was lighter now, shared among seven. They reached the intersection where they usually parted ways. But that night, no one wanted to leave.

"Let's get ramen," Sunghoon suggested.

"And bingsu," Ni-ki added.

"And ice cream," Sunoo said.

They all laughed. Jake felt a smile spread across his face, genuine and warm. He wasn't okay—not yet. But he would be. Because he had them. And that was enough.
