The roar of the engines faded into the distant hum of the paddock, replaced by the cacophony of journalists and the clatter of pit equipment. Oliver Bearman peeled off his race suit, the fireproof fabric sticking to his skin like a second layer. He had finished fourth—a solid result for Ferrari, but not enough to ease the knot in his chest. He glanced across the garage where Kimi Antonelli was being interviewed, his Mercedes overalls unzipped to the waist, a tired smile on his lips. Kimi had come second, a podium finish that should have been his first win if not for a late safety car.

Oliver's heart twisted. He had watched the race from his cockpit, seen Kimi's defensive brilliance, and felt a pride that was entirely unprofessional. They had been rivals since their karting days, but somewhere along the line, the rivalry had blurred into something else. Something Oliver couldn't name, even to himself.

"Good race," a voice said from behind him. Oliver turned to find Kimi, now alone, leaning against the doorframe of the driver's room. His hair was damp with sweat, and there was a faint bruise on his collarbone from the harness.

"You too," Oliver replied, his voice steadier than he felt. "Almost had it."

Kimi shrugged. "Almost isn't enough in this sport." He stepped closer, the space between them shrinking. "But you drove well. That overtake on Norris was brave."

Oliver felt a blush creep up his neck. He busied himself with folding his race suit. "Thanks. I had to try something."

A silence settled, thick with unspoken words. Oliver could feel Kimi's gaze on him, probing, searching. Finally, Kimi said, "Can we talk? Somewhere private?"

Oliver's throat tightened. He nodded, not trusting his voice.

They slipped out of the garage and into the quiet of the hospitality area, now empty as the teams packed up. The evening light filtered through the glass walls, casting long shadows. Kimi led the way to a small balcony overlooking the paddock. Below, the bustle continued, but up here, it felt like another world.

"I've been wanting to say something for a while," Kimi began, leaning against the railing. He stared out at the horizon, where the sunset bled orange and pink. "But I never found the right time. Or the courage."

Oliver's pulse hammered. "What is it?"

Kimi turned to face him, and Oliver saw something vulnerable in his eyes—a crack in the armor of the confident driver. "I think you know, Oliver. I've felt this... connection. For months. Maybe longer. And I can't pretend it's just competition anymore."

Oliver's breath caught. He had dreamed of this moment, but now that it was here, fear gripped him. "Kimi... we're teammates. Sort of. We race for different teams, but—"

"I know what we are," Kimi interrupted softly. "But I don't care about the politics or the media. I care about you."

Those words hit Oliver like a wave. He stepped closer, close enough to see the flecks of gold in Kimi's brown eyes. "I feel it too," he whispered. "I've been so scared. Scared of ruining everything, of losing you as a rival, of—"

Kimi placed a hand on his cheek, silencing him. "You won't lose me. Not ever."

They kissed then, gentle and tentative at first, then deeper, as if making up for all the missed chances. The sounds of the paddock faded, leaving only the thrum of their hearts.

When they pulled apart, Oliver laughed, a shaky, relieved sound. "We're insane. This is insane."

"Probably," Kimi grinned. "But that's never stopped us before."

They stayed on the balcony until the stars came out, talking about everything and nothing—their dreams, their fears, the next race. And in the pit lane below, the lights went out one by one, but for the first time, they didn't mind the darkness because they had each other.
