The Case of the Missing Vibranium Popcorn Machine
Bucky and Sam team up with Wakandan allies to retrieve Shuri's stolen vibranium popcorn machine, only to discover the thief's daughter just wanted her father's love. Lighthearted chaos ensues.
Sam Wilson was not having a good day. He had just finished a mission briefing with Nick Fury when his phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number: "Sam, it's Bucky. I need your help. Something's been stolen from Wakanda. Meet me at the usual spot. Bring snacks."
Sam sighed, grabbed a bag of chips from his kitchen, and flew to the old Avengers facility. When he arrived, Bucky was pacing, a scowl on his face.
"Alright, Barnes, what's so important that you need my snacking expertise?" Sam asked, tossing him a bag of chips.
Bucky caught it automatically, still frowning. "Shuri's latest invention—a vibranium-powered popcorn machine. It was stolen from the lab. She's devastated."
"A popcorn machine?" Sam raised an eyebrow. "Why would anyone steal that?"
"Because it's the only one that can make popcorn that tastes exactly like the movies, but healthier. Dreykov's daughter, Clarisse, wants to give it to her father as a peace offering. She thinks it'll soften him up."
Sam blinked. "That's... oddly wholesome. So what's the plan?"
"We track them down. I have a lead: Vasily Karpov, an old KGB associate of mine, is now working as a tech broker. He might know where the machine is."
They found Karpov at a shady coffee shop in Bucharest. He was sipping espresso with a bored expression. When Bucky and Sam approached, he sighed.
"Barnes. Still running errands for Wakanda?"
"Where's the popcorn machine, Vasily?"
"I don't know. Some guy named Dominic Varek bought it. He's a collector of oddities. Lives in a castle in Sokovia."
Sam and Bucky exchanged glances. "A castle?" Sam said. "Of course."
They flew to Sokovia, dodging a few drones along the way. The castle was imposing, but not heavily guarded. Inside, they found Dominic Varek, a tall man with a monocle, proudly displaying the popcorn machine on a pedestal.
"Ah, the Winter Soldier and the Falcon. To what do I owe the pleasure?" Varek said dramatically.
"We're here for the machine," Bucky said.
"I'm afraid I can't let it go. I have a buyer—General Dreykov. He's paying a fortune. But maybe we can make a deal?"
Suddenly, a shadow fell over them. Okoye, Ayo, and T'Challa dropped from the ceiling, their vibranium suits gleaming.
"The deal is off," T'Challa said calmly. "Wakanda does not negotiate with thieves."
"Now, now," Varek said, pressing a button. The floor opened, and a trapdoor sent everyone but him sliding down a chute. They landed in a pile in the dungeon.
"Great," Sam groaned. "Now what?"
"We wait for Shuri," Ayo said. "She's on her way."
"And I have a plan," Okoye added, pulling out a small device.
An hour later, Shuri arrived via a stealth jet. She zapped the cage door open. "Did they hurt my machine?"
"No, it's fine," Bucky said.
They crept upstairs. Varek was talking to none other than General Dreykov, who had arrived early. Clarisse was with him, looking nervous.
"Father, please, the popcorn machine will make you happy," Clarisse pleaded.
"Happy? I want power!" Dreykov roared.
At that moment, Steve Rogers burst through the window, shield first. "Did someone say popcorn?"
Everyone stared. Steve shrugged. "Fury called me. Said there was a party."
Nick Fury appeared from behind a curtain. "I always know when there's popcorn involved."
In the chaos, Clarisse grabbed the machine and ran. Bucky chased her, but she was surprisingly fast. She dashed into a room and locked the door. Bucky kicked it open, only to find her sitting on the floor, eating popcorn.
"It's really good," she said, offering him some.
Bucky sighed and sat down. "Yeah, I know."
Sam found them a minute later. "Seriously, Barnes? We're on a mission."
"She's just a kid who wants her dad to like her. Let her have this."
Sam softened. "Fine. But we're taking the machine back to Shuri after she's done."
Clarisse nodded. "Deal."
They walked out together, finding the others had subdued Dreykov and Varek. T'Challa smiled. "It seems we have a new ally."
Clarisse beamed. "Can I visit Wakanda?"
"Of course," Shuri said. "We can build a better popcorn machine together."
As they left the castle, Sam turned to Bucky. "You know, for a guy with a metal arm, you're a softie."
Bucky smirked. "Takes one to know one."
And they all went for burgers. With popcorn on the side.
