The rain fell in sheets, blurring the world beyond the cathedral’s stained glass windows. Kanda Yuu stood rigid, his fingers wrapped around Mugen’s hilt, every muscle coiled for a fight he knew was coming. Beside him, Lavi Bookman hummed an off-key tune, his red hair plastered to his forehead, a casual grin fixed on his face despite the oppressive atmosphere.

“You’re too relaxed,” Kanda muttered, his voice a low growl.

“Relaxed? Me? Never.” Lavi’s eye sparkled. “Just conserving energy for the big show.”

Kanda shot him a glare, but his heart wasn’t in it. They had been tracking a Level 3 Akuma that specialized in illusions—a parasite that fed on fear and doubt. The last two Exorcists sent to eliminate it had returned broken, their minds shattered. Now it was their turn.

The cathedral doors slammed shut behind them, and the torches flickered, casting dancing shadows that seemed to breathe. Lavi’s grin faltered for a second before returning.

“Welcome, little lambs.” The voice was everywhere and nowhere, echoing off the stone pillars. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Kanda drew Mugen, the blade humming with a purple aura. “Show yourself, coward.”

A laugh, melodic and chilling. “Oh, I will. But first, let’s play a game.”

The world twisted. The cathedral melted away, replaced by a desolate battlefield—the scene of Kanda’s greatest failure. Bodies lay strewn across a muddy field, and at the center, a child’s corpse: Alma. Kanda’s breath caught. He knew it was an illusion, but his heart didn’t care.

“Don’t look,” Lavi’s voice cut through, sharp and real. His hand grabbed Kanda’s wrist. “It’s her. It’s feeding on you.”

Kanda shook him off, forced himself to stare at the mirage until it dissolved, replaced by the cathedral’s cold floor. “I know.” But his voice was rough.

The Akuma laughed again. “Ah, the red-haired one. Always the observer. Let’s see what you fear.”

The scene shifted: a vast library, bookshelves stretching into infinity. Lavi stood alone, a book burning in his hands, the pages turning to ash. The Bookman’s legacy, destroyed. His eye widened, and for a moment, he was still.

“Lavi!” Kanda’s shout broke the spell. Mugen cleaved through the illusion, and the cathedral returned.

“Clever, clever,” the Akuma purred. “But I have all night.”

They moved deeper into the cathedral, backs to each other, swords and hammer ready. The illusions came faster—memories twisted into nightmares. Kanda saw Master Tiedoll’s corpse, Lavi saw a faceless Bookman. Each time, they grounded each other with a word, a touch. The lines between reality and fantasy blurred.

“We need to end this,” Kanda growled, his patience frayed.

“Got a plan?” Lavi asked, his hammer Braut swinging idly.

“Find the core. It’s hiding in the bell tower.”

They sprinted up a spiral staircase, the steps shifting beneath them. Doors appeared where none existed, each offering a different world of torment. Kanda didn’t hesitate—he slashed through them. Lavi followed, his jokes turning terse.

On the top floor, the bell tower was empty except for a single mirror. In it, they saw themselves—but not quite. Kanda’s reflection had Mugen’s blade at his own throat; Lavi’s reflection was laughing, but his eye wept blood.

“Last chance,” the Akuma’s voice said. “Kill your partner, and I’ll let you walk free. Or kill yourselves—that would be entertaining, too.”

Kanda’s jaw tightened. “I don’t make deals with scum.”

Lavi stepped in front of him, shielding him. “The Bookman Clan doesn’t either.”

The mirror shattered. The real Akuma emerged from the shards—a grotesque, multi-limbed creature that screamed with a thousand voices.

They fought. Kanda’s strikes were precise, but the Akuma warped space, forcing him to hit himself. Lavi’s hammer smashed pillars, but the creature flowed around his attacks. They were losing ground.

Then Lavi stumbled, a cut opening on his arm. The Akuma lunged for his throat. Kanda didn’t think—he threw himself in front of Lavi, Mugen parrying the blow at the cost of a gash across his chest.

“Yuu!” Lavi shouted, using his given name for the first time.

Kanda gasped, blood soaking his coat. “Shut up. Finish it.”

Lavi’s eyes burned. He swung Braut, not at the Akuma, but at the bell above. The iron clapper rang, a deafening tone that resonated with innocence. The Akuma shrieked, writhing. Kanda used the opening, plunging Mugen into its core.

The creature dissolved into ash. The illusions died. The cathedral fell silent.

Kanda collapsed. Lavi caught him, lowering him to the floor. “You idiot. Why?”

“You’re… loud.” Kanda’s lips twitched. “And Bookman would kill me if you died.”

Lavi laughed, but it was wet. “I take notes, you know. You just had to make it interesting.”

They stayed there, the rain’s steady rhythm the only sound. Lavi’s hand found Kanda’s, fingers intertwining. Kanda didn’t pull away.

“We should move,” Kanda said, his voice weak.

“In a minute.” Lavi pressed his forehead to Kanda’s. “Just need to remember this.”

Kanda closed his eyes. For once, he let himself believe in something other than the mission.

When dawn broke, they walked out of the cathedral, side by side, shadows behind them.
