The Fluffiest Horror
Rose Tyler explores a derelict spaceship and encounters a supposedly fearsome creature that turns out to be an adorable, clumsy ball of fluff. What starts as a horror story becomes a lighthearted adventure as she befriends the Grumblepuff.
Rose Tyler stepped off the TARDIS onto the dimly lit deck of a derelict spaceship. The air was stale, with a faint metallic tang. "Lovely. Another abandoned death trap," she muttered, flashlight beam cutting through the gloom. The Doctor had popped off to check some energy readings, leaving her to explore the living quarters. Typical.
A low growl echoed from the corridor ahead. Rose stopped, heart thumping. She'd faced Daleks, Cybermen, and the odd Slitheen. This was probably nothing. But the growl came again, closer, followed by a series of clicking sounds. "Right then," she said, gripping the flashlight like a club. "Show yourself."
From the shadows, a shape emerged. It was about the size of a dog, covered in what looked like bright purple fur. It had two large, luminous eyes and a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth. It growled again, a sound that would be terrifying if it weren't accompanied by a little squeak at the end. Rose blinked.
The creature took a step forward, teeth bared. But its foot got caught on a loose cable, and it tripped, landing in a heap of fluff. It let out an indignant huff and scrambled up, shaking itself. Rose couldn't help it—she laughed. "You're not very scary, are you?" she said.
The creature stopped, tilted its head, and then made a sound that was half growl, half whimper. It seemed… embarrassed. Rose crouched down. "It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you." She held out her hand. The creature sniffed, then tentatively licked her fingers. Its tongue was warm and rough, like sandpaper.
Suddenly, the ceiling lights flickered on. The creature yelped and scurried behind Rose's legs. A voice echoed from the intercom: "Sorry about that! I didn't realize the ship had company. I'm the caretaker. That little fellow is a Grumblepuff. They're bred as guard animals, but they're total softies."
Rose looked down at the trembling ball of fluff. "A Grumblepuff?"
The creature peeked out from behind her, then gave a little bark that turned into a yawn. Rose grinned. "You're adorable."
She spent the next twenty minutes playing with the Grumblepuff, which had taken to following her everywhere. It showed her a hidden stash of treats and even let her pet its belly. When the Doctor returned, he found Rose sitting cross-legged on the floor, the creature asleep in her lap. "Rose, I thought you were in trouble. I heard growling."
"Nah," she said, stroking the fur. "Just a fluffy horror. The caretaker said we can keep him if we want."
The Doctor raised an eyebrow. "A Grumblepuff? They're harmless. Bit of a pest, actually. But if you like…" He reached down to pet it, and the creature yawned, showing its teeth again. "They try so hard to be scary."
"And fail miserably," Rose said with a smile. She gently nudged the creature awake. "Come on, fluffy. Let's see what snacks are in the TARDIS."
The Grumblepuff bounded ahead, barking happily. Rose and the Doctor followed, the ship's eerie corridors now feeling anything but threatening.
