The rain had stopped an hour ago, leaving the world washed clean and glistening under the dim glow of the streetlights. Diana sat on the edge of the porch, her knees drawn up to her chin, watching the occasional car pass by. The air smelled of wet asphalt and damp earth, a scent she had always associated with endings—of summer days, of childhood, of moments that slipped away before you could hold them.

Behind her, the cottage was warm and bright. She could hear Iris moving inside, the soft clink of a teacup being set down, the gentle pad of bare feet on hardwood floors. They had spent the day lazily, reading books, eating toast with jam, and napping on the sofa. It was the kind of day Diana had once thought impossible—ordinary and perfect.

She hugged her knees tighter. Lately, the happiness felt fragile, like spun glass. Every time Iris smiled at her, every time their fingers brushed accidentally, Diana’s heart ached with a fierce, unnamed longing. They had been friends for as long as she could remember. But somewhere along the way, the friendship had deepened into something else—something Diana was afraid to name.

“You’ll catch a cold out here.”

Diana turned. Iris stood in the doorway, wrapped in an oversized cardigan, her hair loose and slightly damp from a recent shower. She held two mugs of tea, steam rising in lazy spirals. Without waiting for an answer, she came out and sat beside Diana, handing her a mug.

“Thanks,” Diana murmured, wrapping her fingers around the warmth.

Iris didn’t push for conversation. That was one of the things Diana loved most about her—the way Iris could sit in silence, comfortable and present. They watched the stars peek through the thinning clouds, the distant hum of the city a faint lullaby.

“You’ve been quiet all day,” Iris said finally, her voice soft. “Is something wrong?”

Diana shook her head, but the motion felt unconvincing. She took a sip of tea—chamomile, with a hint of honey. Iris always remembered how she liked it.

“Just thinking,” Diana said.

“About?”

Diana hesitated. The words were there, lodged in her throat like stones. She wanted to say: I think I’m in love with you. But the thought terrified her. What if it ruined everything? What if Iris didn’t feel the same?

“About how quiet it gets after the rain,” Diana said instead.

Iris hummed softly, a sound of acknowledgment. She shifted closer, her shoulder brushing against Diana’s. The contact sent a shiver down Diana’s spine that had nothing to do with the cold.

“I like the quiet,” Iris said. “It’s when I can hear myself think. And when I can hear you, too.”

Diana’s breath caught. She turned to look at Iris, whose gaze was fixed on the sky, her profile illuminated by the faint light. There was a softness in her expression, a vulnerability that made Diana’s heart clench.

“What do you hear?” Diana asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Iris turned to meet her eyes. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them seemed to thicken, charged with unspoken words.

“I hear a heart that’s trying to say something,” Iris said slowly. “But it’s scared.”

Diana’s eyes stung. She blinked rapidly, trying to keep the tears at bay. “What if saying it changes everything?”

“Maybe it does,” Iris said. She set her mug aside and reached for Diana’s hand, their fingers intertwining. “But some changes are worth it.”

Diana let out a shaky breath. The warmth of Iris’s hand in hers felt like an anchor. She looked down at their joined hands, then back up at Iris’s face, searching for any hint of doubt. But all she saw was tenderness.

“I love you,” Diana said. The words tumbled out, raw and unfiltered. “Not just as a friend. I’m in love with you, Iris.”

A smile spread across Iris’s face, slow and luminous. She leaned in, her forehead resting against Diana’s. “I know,” she whispered. “I’ve known for a while. I was waiting for you to be ready.”

Diana laughed, a sound half-relief, half-joy. “And if I never was?”

“Then I would have waited forever,” Iris said simply. She pulled back just enough to look into Diana’s eyes. “Because you’re worth it.”

They stayed like that, foreheads touching, breath mingling, until the tea grew cold. The night wrapped around them, silent and patient, as they finally spoke the language their hearts had been writing all along.
