The compound was eerily silent. The hum of the servers in the lab was the only sound that dared to break the stillness. Tony Stark sat on the edge of his workbench, his fingers drumming a restless rhythm against the metal. His mind was still reeling from the mission—the explosions, the narrow escapes, the way Natasha had moved like a phantom through the chaos. She was safe now, but the image of her diving behind a collapsing wall, a split second before it crumbled, was burned into his retinas.

He heard her footsteps before he saw her. Light, deliberate, the gait of someone who had been trained to be silent but chose not to be. Natasha emerged from the shadows of the corridor, her tactical suit still smudged with dust and grime. She stopped a few feet away, her green eyes fixed on him with an intensity that made his chest tighten.

"You should get some sleep," she said, her voice low, almost a whisper.

"Says the woman who just spent forty-eight hours without a nap," Tony replied, forcing a smirk. "I'm fine. Just... decompressing."

Natasha took a step closer. "You're brooding."

"I'm analyzing. There's a difference."

She raised an eyebrow, and he sighed, the bravado slipping. "You almost died today, Nat."

"Almost is the key word." She moved to stand beside him, her shoulder brushing his. "You've done the same thing a hundred times."

"It's different when it's you." The words came out before he could stop them, raw and unguarded. He looked away, embarrassed by his own vulnerability.

Natasha reached out, her hand covering his. Her touch was surprisingly warm, grounding. "Tony..."

He turned to meet her gaze. The arc reactor hummed softly beneath his shirt, a constant reminder of his own mortality. But in this moment, with her hand in his, it felt like a distant echo.

"I can't lose you," he said, his voice barely audible.

"You won't." She stepped into his space, her forehead resting against his. "I promise."

Their lips met, soft and tentative at first, then deepening with a hunger born of fear and relief. The lab disappeared around them, the hum of the servers fading into a low thrum that matched the beating of their hearts.

When they finally pulled apart, Natasha's cheeks were flushed, and Tony's eyes were bright with unshed tears. He chuckled, a breathless sound. "I've wanted to do that for a while."

"I know." She smiled, a rare, genuine smile that transformed her face. "I was waiting for you to stop overthinking."

"Well, I'm a work in progress." He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. She melted into him, her head resting on his shoulder. They stood there, wrapped in each other, as the storm outside—and inside—quieted into peace.
