The Space Between Sirens

After a call that hits too close to home, Tim Bradford shows up at Lucy Chen's apartment late at night with coffee and something he's been avoiding saying out loud — and finally stops avoiding it.

The knock came at 11:47 p.m., three sharp raps that Lucy Chen would have recognized anywhere.

She opened the door in her off-duty sweats, hair twisted into a messy knot, and found Tim Bradford standing in the hallway of her apartment building with two cups of coffee and the particular set to his jaw that meant he'd been chewing on something all the way across town.

"It's late," she said.

"I know." He held out a cup. "Black, two sugars. Don't make it weird."

Lucy took it, because of course she did. "You showing up at my door with coffee isn't weird. The fact that you drove twenty minutes to do it is a little weird."

He stepped past her into the apartment without being invited, which was also very Tim, and settled onto her couch like he'd been there a hundred times. He had been, but never at midnight, and never looking like that.

She closed the door and sat down beside him, close enough that their knees almost touched. "What happened?"

"Nothing happened."

"Tim."

He stared at the coffee in his hands. The apartment was quiet except for the distant hum of the freeway and the occasional siren bleeding through the walls of a city that never really slept. Lucy had learned to sleep through sirens months ago. She'd never learned to sleep through Tim Bradford showing up unannounced.

"The call this afternoon," he finally said. "The husband on Ventura."

Lucy remembered. She'd been his boot on the call, watching him talk a woman down off a ledge of her own kitchen, his voice low and steady like a hand on a shoulder. She'd thought at the time that he was just doing his job.

"You knew her," Lucy said quietly. It wasn't a question.

Tim's jaw worked. "Academy class. Twenty years ago. She washed out, married a guy, I lost touch. Whole life between then and now." He took a long drink of coffee. "I kept thinking about all the things that have to go right for someone to end up somewhere else entirely."

Lucy set her cup on the table, turned toward him. "Like what?"

"Like a rookie who won't stop asking questions." He looked at her then, really looked, and something in the careful architecture of his face shifted — a wall going down brick by brick. "Like getting partnered with somebody who makes you want to be better than the guy you were before."

Lucy's breath caught. "Tim."

"I'm not good at this part," he said. "I'm good at the job. I'm good at the rules. I'm not good at — " He gestured vaguely between them. "This. Saying it out loud."

"Then don't say it."

She leaned in and kissed him. Soft at first, a question, and then he answered it, his hand coming up to cup the back of her head like she was something he'd spent a long time deciding he was allowed to hold. The coffee went cold on the table.

When they broke apart, his forehead rested against hers, and for once he didn't have anything clever to say.

"That's not following protocol," he murmured.

"You hate protocol."

"I love protocol." His thumb traced her jaw. "I just hate following it when it means staying three feet away from you."

Lucy laughed, and it came out wet at the edges, because there were sirens somewhere out in the dark doing their endless work and she was here, warm and wanted, in the arms of the most stubborn man she'd ever met.

"Stay," she said.

Tim pulled her closer, and the city kept spinning outside, and neither of them moved.
