The infirmary was quiet, save for the soft hum of Will Solace’s singing. He wasn’t sure why he sang—maybe it was a habit from his mother, or maybe it was the only way to keep his hands steady as he worked. The stitches were small, precise, each one a promise that Nico di Angelo would pull through. Again.

Nico lay on the cot, pale as the sheets beneath him. His black hair was matted with sweat and dust, and a nasty gash ran from his shoulder to his ribs—a parting gift from a rogue empousa they’d encountered during a border patrol. Will had found him collapsed just outside the strawberry fields, barely conscious, his sword still clutched in his trembling hand.

“You’re an idiot,” Will muttered, not for the first time. He tied off the last stitch and reached for a roll of gauze. “You know you’re supposed to call for backup, right? Not take on a nest of monsters by yourself.”

Nico’s eyes fluttered open. They were dark, always so dark, but tonight they held a glint of defiance even through the pain. “I had it under control.”

Will snorted. “Under control? You were bleeding out on the ground, Nico. If I hadn’t found you when I did—” He stopped, his voice catching. He didn’t want to finish that sentence. Not now. Not ever.

Nico turned his head, watching Will with an intensity that made the son of Apollo’s cheeks warm. “But you did find me. You always do.”

Will pressed the gauze against the wound, his fingers lingering a moment longer than necessary. “Because I worry about you. Constantly. It’s exhausting, you know.”

“I never asked you to worry.”

“I know. That’s what makes it worse.” Will’s voice softened. He finished bandaging and sat back on the stool beside the cot. “I care about you, Nico. Maybe too much.”

The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning. Nico’s breath hitched, but he didn’t look away. “Will…”

“Don’t.” Will shook his head, a sad smile tugging at his lips. “Don’t say you’re sorry. Don’t say you don’t deserve it. I’ve heard it all before, and I’m not listening.” He reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from Nico’s forehead. His hand lingered, cupping Nico’s cheek. “I love you. I have for a long time. And I’m done pretending it doesn’t break me every time you get hurt.”

Nico’s eyes widened. For a moment, he was silent, and Will’s heart hammered against his ribs. Then, slowly, Nico leaned into his touch, his hand coming up to cover Will’s. “You really are a terrible secret-keeper,” he whispered, but there was no malice in it. Just wonder. “I… I think I’ve known. But I was too scared to believe it.”

“Scared of what?”

“That I’d ruin it. That I’d drag you into the darkness with me.”

Will laughed, a soft, warm sound. “You’re not darkness, Nico. You’re shadows—and even shadows need light to exist. So let me be your light.”

Nico’s lips curved into a rare, genuine smile. “You already are.”

Will leaned down, his forehead resting against Nico’s. Their breath mingled, and the world outside the infirmary—the sounds of camp, the distant laughter of demigods—faded into nothing. “Stay with me,” Will murmured. “No more stupid solo missions. No more almost-dying. Please.”

“I can’t promise that,” Nico said, his voice barely a whisper. “But I can promise that I’ll try. For you.”

“That’s all I ask.”

And then Will closed the distance between them, pressing his lips to Nico’s in a kiss that was gentle and fierce and full of all the words they hadn’t said. Nico’s hand tangled in Will’s blond curls, pulling him closer, and for a moment, the pain of the day melted away.

When they finally broke apart, Will was smiling so wide his cheeks hurt. “You know, for the son of Hades, you’re not so bad at this romance thing.”

Nico rolled his eyes, but there was no hiding the blush that crept up his neck. “Shut up, Solace.”

“Make me.”

Nico grinned, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He tugged Will down for another kiss, and Will let himself be pulled, grateful that for once, the shadows had brought them together instead of tearing them apart.

Outside, the stars began to peek through the clouds, and the infirmary was filled with a warmth that had nothing to do with the summer night. It was the warmth of two souls finding each other—a healer and a ghost, a sun and a shadow—finally learning that they were meant to fit.

And if anyone happened to walk past the infirmary that night and heard soft laughter and whispered promises, they were kind enough to keep walking, leaving the two boys to their quiet, precious moment.

Because some things—like the bond between a son of Apollo and a son of Hades—were worth protecting.

Will pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against Nico’s once more. “I love you, Nico di Angelo.”

Nico’s eyes, usually so guarded, were open and vulnerable. “I love you too, Will Solace. Even if you are a hopeless romantic.”

Will laughed, pressing a kiss to Nico’s temple. “Guilty as charged. Now rest. I’ll be right here when you wake up.”

Nico’s eyes were already fluttering closed, exhaustion finally claiming him. But his hand never let go of Will’s, and Will had never felt more at peace.

As the night deepened, Will watched over him, a silent sentinel, grateful for every breath Nico took. And in the quiet of the infirmary, surrounded by the faint scent of nectar and bandages, he made a silent vow: he would protect this boy—this beautiful, broken, brave boy—for as long as the Fates allowed.

And maybe, just maybe, they’d rewrite those threads together.
