A Doll's Reflection

Naruto, struggling with low self-esteem, dresses in feminine attire to feel desired, believing it might make the village accept him. His Team 7 members—Sakura, Sasuke, and Kakashi—confront him with concern and support, helping him see his worth beyond appearance.

The kunai slipped from Naruto’s fingers, clattering against the wooden floor of the training ground. He didn’t move to pick it up. Instead, he stared at his own reflection in the blade’s polished surface—a girl’s face, painted with rouge and kohl, framed by a blonde wig that cascaded over his shoulders. The skirt he wore was short, pleated, and pale blue, matching the ribbon tied around his neck. Beneath it, lace-edged stockings and a garter belt pressed against his skin, a constant reminder of the role he had chosen.

“Naruto?” Sakura’s voice cut through the afternoon air. She stood at the edge of the clearing, her forehead protector glinting. Behind her, Kakashi leaned against a tree, his orange book forgotten. Sasuke emerged from the shadows, his dark eyes narrowing.

Naruto forced a smile. “Hey, guys! Just, uh, trying something new.” He laughed, but it was hollow. The sound died in his throat as Sakura stepped closer, her expression shifting from confusion to concern.

“This isn’t funny,” she said, her voice soft. “Why are you dressed like that?”

Naruto’s hands trembled, and he clasped them behind his back. “Because... because I need it, okay? I need people to look at me and see something worth wanting. All my life, they glared at me like I was a monster. Maybe if I’m pretty, if I’m good at this, they’ll stop hating me.”

Sasuke’s jaw tightened. “That’s stupid.”

“Sasuke!” Sakura hissed.

“It is,” Sasuke repeated, stepping forward. “You’re not a doll. You’re a shinobi. A damn good one.”

Naruto’s eyes stung, but he blinked back the tears. “You don’t get it. You’ve never been alone. You’ve never been the thing everyone fears.”

Kakashi sighed, finally closing his book. “Naruto, we’re not saying you have to stop. But this isn’t about wanting attention. It’s about punishing yourself. And that’s not okay.”

Sakura reached out, her fingers brushing Naruto’s cheek. “We’re your team. We see you. Not the makeup. Not the clothes. You.”

Naruto’s breath hitched. He looked at each of them—Sakura’s earnest eyes, Kakashi’s steady gaze, and Sasuke’s guarded but softening expression. For a moment, the weight lifted. But only a moment.

“I don’t know how to stop,” he whispered.

Sasuke stepped closer, close enough that Naruto could smell the pine of his shampoo. “Then we’ll help you figure it out. That’s what team does.”

Naruto’s lip quivered. “Why do you care?”

“Because you’re my rival,” Sasuke said, and a ghost of a smile tugged at his mouth. “And I don’t lose to anyone. Not even to your self-hatred.”

The words were blunt, harsh even. But they wrapped around Naruto like a lifeline. He let out a shaky breath, and Sakura pulled him into a hug. Over her shoulder, he saw Sasuke’s hand reach out, hesitated, then land gently on his back.

It wasn’t a solution. It wasn’t even a beginning. But it was something. And for now, that was enough.
