The astronomy tower was cold, all stone and starlight, with a bite in the air that promised frost. Regulus shivered and pulled his robes tighter. James Potter emerged from the stairwell, a pale shape in the dark. The Marauders’ Map had said the corridors were clear, but Regulus’s heart still pounded like it was trying to break free.

“You came.” James’s voice was soft, his breath fogging in the cold. No mockery—just warmth that made Regulus ache.

“I always do.” Regulus stared at the sky, couldn’t bring himself to look at James. “This is reckless.”

“Maybe.” James stepped closer, his shoes scraping against stone. Too loud in the quiet. “But so is pretending this isn’t real.”

Regulus shut his eyes. For weeks these meetings had felt like a dream—James’s hands on his, gentle, and whispered words that went against everything his family taught him. But dawn always came, and the Black name settled back on him like a weight.

“My brother can never know.” The words tasted like ash.

“I know.” James stopped an arm’s length away, his voice low, careful. “I don’t need to shout it from the towers, Reg. I just need you to believe this is real.”

Regulus made himself look. James’s face was open, unguarded—that crooked smile, soft. Not the Quidditch star who taunted Slytherins, not the troublemaker who hexed prefects. Just a boy with messy hair and kind eyes, reaching out.

“I’m scared.” The words tore out before he could stop them. “Of what happens when this falls apart.”

James’s fingers brushed his cheek, light. “Then we don’t let it fall.”

The kiss came slow, tentative. Like the first thaw. Regulus’s lips parted under James’s careful pressure, and something loosened in his chest. James tasted like peppermint and night air, his hand sliding into Regulus’s hair, cupping the nape of his neck.

“We can stop anytime,” James murmured between kisses, thumb tracing Regulus’s jaw. “Whatever you need.”

Regulus shook his head. “I don’t want to stop.”

They undressed each other slowly, deliberately. Each layer felt like a shield set aside. James’s hands were steady, and he kept whispering—you’re beautiful, I’ve got you, we don’t have to rush. Regulus let James guide him to the blanket on the floor. The cold bit through, but James’s body was a furnace.

It wasn’t about passion, really. It was trust. Regulus’s breath caught, fingers digging into James’s shoulders as fear crept in. But James paused, met his eyes, and waited.

“I’m here.” James pressed his forehead to Regulus’s. “You’re safe.”

And for the first time, Regulus believed it. He let go, let himself fall into James’s warmth, into the rhythm of their bodies under the stars. Not frantic—slow, careful, like a door opening onto a room he’d always been scared of.

Afterward, they lay tangled together, James’s cloak over them. Regulus pressed his ear to James’s chest, listened to his heartbeat—more comforting than any spell.

“I don’t know how to do this.” Regulus’s voice was barely a whisper. “The sneaking, the lying. It’s like wearing a mask that’s suffocating me.”

James traced idle patterns on his spine. “Then we find another way. Slowly. One step at a time.” He kissed Regulus’s hair. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Regulus closed his eyes. The fear was still there, coiled in his gut, but quieter now, drowned out by James’s warmth. The stars wheeled overhead, indifferent. But here, in this cold tower, Regulus felt something he’d never dared to name. Hope.

Dawn crept in pale gold, spilling across the stones. Regulus let himself drift toward sleep, James’s heartbeat a lullaby. Tomorrow, the masks would go back on—the Black heir, the Slytherin, the son of the Dark. But tonight, he was just a boy, held by a boy who saw him whole.
