The BAU had just closed a case that would haunt them for weeks. A serial killer who used mirrors to reflect his victims' deepest fears before snuffing out their lives. The team was drained, hollow-eyed, and desperate for a semblance of normalcy. Rossi, ever the host, insisted on a gathering at his house—a little wine, some good food, and no talk of unsubs. It was a command, not a request.

Emily Prentiss stood on the patio, a glass of red wine in her hand, watching the stars struggle against the city's light pollution. The air was cool, carrying the scent of jasmine from Rossi's garden. She heard footsteps behind her, knew them intimately before she saw the shadow.

"You're brooding," Aaron Hotchner said, his voice low and rough from too much coffee and too little sleep.

She didn't turn. "And you're not?"

He moved to stand beside her, close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating off him. "I've been told I brood professionally."

A huff of laughter escaped her. "Who told you that?"

"Gideon. He also said I should do something about it before I drive everyone crazy."

Emily finally looked at him. His eyes were tired, but there was a softness there that he reserved for a select few. She was one of them. "And what did you decide to do?"

He didn't answer. Instead, he reached out, his fingers brushing against hers. The touch was electric, sending a shiver through her. "I've been thinking about this case," he said, his gaze dropping to their hands. "About the mirrors. How they reflect what's already there, but twisted. Made darker."

"That's a cheerful thought."

"It made me realize something." He took a breath. "I've been reflecting my fears back at you. Avoiding this because I'm afraid of what happens if it goes wrong."

Emily's heart hammered. "And what if it goes right?"

Inside, the party was in full swing. Penelope Garcia was dancing with Derek Morgan, her wild skirts twirling. JJ was laughing at something Reid said, probably a scientific fact about wine. Gideon sat in a corner, nursing a whiskey, watching everyone with a knowing smile. Rossi was at the stove, adding more garlic to the sauce.

Suddenly, Garcia squealed. "Where's Hotch? And Prentiss? They're missing!"

Morgan grinned. "Probably brooding together. Should we spy?"

"Absolutely not," JJ said, but her eyes sparkled.

Reid adjusted his glasses. "Statistically, if they are engaging in a romantic encounter, the probability of interruption is high. Should we create a distraction?"

Gideon chuckled. "Let them be. They've earned it."

Back on the patio, Hotch had taken Emily's hand fully. "I don't want to be afraid anymore," he said. "I want to try."

Emily stepped closer, her free hand coming up to touch his cheek. "I've been waiting for you to say that."

"I know. I'm sorry it took a house of mirrors to make me see clearly."

She laughed, the sound bright and unexpected. "That's the worst pickup line I've ever heard."

"But did it work?"

She pulled him down, kissing him softly. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her against him. The kiss deepened, a release of all the tension of the past months. When they broke apart, they were both breathless.

"Yes," she whispered. "It worked."

They stayed there for a moment, foreheads pressed together. Then, a crash from inside broke the spell. They turned to see Garcia standing at the window, her mouth agape, a plate shattered at her feet.

"Oh my god!" she shrieked. "They kissed! I mean, I knew it, but they kissed!"

Morgan appeared behind her, laughing. "Nice work, Hotch."

Emily groaned, burying her face in Hotch's chest. "They're never going to let us live this down."

"That's okay," he said, his voice warm. "I think I can handle it."

They walked back inside hand in hand. The team erupted in cheers and catcalls. Even Gideon raised his glass in a silent toast. Reid muttered something about pheromones, but JJ shushed him.

Rossi handed them each a fresh glass of wine. "About time," he said, clinking his glass against theirs.

Hotch looked at Emily, her eyes sparkling in the dim light. The dark shadows of the case were still there, but they were softer now, laced with something lighter. He squeezed her hand.

"To new beginnings," he said softly.

"To finally looking in the mirror and liking what we see," she replied.

And as the night wore on, filled with laughter and silly anecdotes, the weight of the dark lifted, replaced by the gentle warmth of something that had been a long time coming.
