A Fear We Can Share
In a shared nightmare, Midoriya and Todoroki must face their deepest fears—and learn that the only way out is together.
The world tilted. Then it shattered—cold and dust everywhere. Izuku stumbled, feet sinking into ash that gave way to ice. Above, a sky the color of bruises churned with shadows. To his left, a black mass writhed, whispering *quirkless, worthless, alone*. To his right, Endeavor loomed—but wrong, his face a frozen snarl, flames blue and hungry.
Izuku threw a punch, wind screaming, but the shadow absorbed it, reformed twice as big. Shoto sent a glacier toward the Endeavor-thing, but it shattered against the construct’s armor. They were losing, separated by the dream’s malice.
“Midoriya!” Shoto’s voice cut through. He slid across the ice, frost clinging to his right side. “This isn’t a normal dream. I can feel your fear. You can feel mine.”
Izuku gasped. He felt it—a cold knot of dread that wasn’t his own. Shoto’s fear of becoming his father. Of losing himself to the fire. “We have to work together,” Izuku said, breath misting. “Combine our quirks.”
They tried. He channeled One For All into his arm, green lightning arcing; Shoto sent a wave of fire and ice. But their quirks clashed—sputtering, unstable—nearly knocking them off their feet. The monsters pressed closer.
“I can’t do this,” Izuku whispered, going to his knees. The shadow loomed. “I still feel like that quirkless kid. What if I can’t live up to All Might’s legacy?”
Shoto’s eyes widened. He knelt beside Izuku. The ice-Endeavor froze mid-step, listening. “I never wanted to use my fire because it was his. I thought if I rejected it, I’d stay myself. But I just trapped myself in ice.” His hand shook. “I’m scared of becoming a puppet.”
They looked at each other. The air stilled.
“I see you, Todoroki,” Izuku said, voice cracked. “Not your father. You.”
Shoto’s breath hitched. “And I see a hero. Not a failure.”
The ground split. The shadow and the ice figure merged, screaming into a colossal amalgam—All Might’s gaunt form fused with Endeavor’s armor, a monstrosity of embers and hollow cheeks. It raised a fist the size of a building.
Something clicked. Shoto stepped in front of Izuku, his left side igniting—clean, bright fire, burning without hesitation. “I’m not afraid,” he said, and the flames roared.
Izuku scrambled up. One For All surged—not just power, but trust. He put his palm on Shoto’s back. “Let’s do it. Together.”
Their quirks met—not as separate forces, but as melody and harmony. Shoto’s fire and ice spiraled into a torrent; Izuku’s green lightning wove through it like thread. They fused into a rainbow vortex, a hurricane of light and warmth, and they released it as one.
The dreamscape shattered around them. The monsters screamed, then dissolved into petals of light.
---
Izuku woke with a jolt, heart pounding. On his back on the training ground, sun warm on his face. Someone held his right hand. He turned.
Shoto lay beside him, eyes open, unguarded. A real smile curved his lips. “I see myself better now,” he said. “Because of you.”
Izuku’s face went hot. He sat up, still holding on. “I think I get it now—what it means to trust someone with your weaknesses.”
Shoto’s thumb traced a slow circle on his knuckles. “Tea?”
Izuku nodded, didn’t want to let go. They rose together, hands lingering until they broke apart—shoulders brushing as they walked. The dream was gone, but something real had taken its place.
